LOCAL NEWS Community Calendar Quitters to Meet Perquimans Quitters will meet June 25th, at the County Office Building at 2 p.m. Effie Harris of Elizabeth City will demonstrate the use of the Olfa Cutter. Club members may bring fabric scraps for a strip piecing project. Plans also will be made for finishing the quilted wall hanging being made for Perquimans County Committee for the celebration on the Roanoke Voyages. There will be no regular meetings in July or August. Pig Pickin Slated Hie Perquimans County Jaycees and Jaycettes are again hosting an afternoon of family fun and games with an evening of spectular fireworks at Missing Mill Park. A pig picking supper will be held Fri day, June 29th from 3-7 p.m. at the Perquimans County High School to help sponsor this event. Donations $3.50 a plate. Youth Sewing Classes Set ?.Youth Sewing Class will be offered by the Perquimans County Ex tension Service during the month of July. Service news Airman Murray E. Baccus II, Ion of Murray E. Baccus of plural Route 3, Elizabeth, N.C., BACCUS and Dorcas R. Adams of 2828 Seventh St. N.E., Birmingham, Ala., has been assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas, after completing Air Force basic training. During the six weeks at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force. The airman will now receive specialized instructions in the civil engineering field. Is Roanoke Voyages Stamp to be issued The U.S. Postal Service has announced that the first Issue in the new Explorers' Series, a 20 cent commemorative stamp honoring the 400th anniversary of the Roanoke Voyages, will be issued on July 13 in Manteo, North Carolina. Specific details about the first day of issue ceremony will be announced in the near future. On March 25, 1584, Queen Elizabeth I granted Walter Raleigh permission to establish an English colony in the New World. Raleigh formed an expedition and placed Philip Amadaa and Arthur Barlow in command. On July IS, 1584, they landed on what is now the coast of North Carolina and took possession of the new land in the name of the Queen. Pleased with the reports of the expedition. Bradbury Thompson, a design coordinator (or the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, was the stamps tyopgrapher. Since no originsl plans or specifications exist for any of the vessels of the Roanoke Voyages, Mr. Lundgren based his design on a description of a representative vessel, the Elizabeth, in an account of the 1585 voyage. Above the design, in lour lines of black type are the words "Roanoke Voyages, North Carolina. ISM." In the lower left corner of the design in a single line of black type in "USA 20 cents." The modeler of the stamp was Richard C. Sennett of the American Bank Note Company, . 4 which printed the vertically oriented stamps on the gravure ? press in yellow, red, blue, brown and black. ?* Obituary MARGARET G. O'CONNELL Edenton-Margaret Garner O'Connell, 61. Route 2, Edenton died Friday in her home. A Native of York County, Va., she was employed with the Charlotte Liberty Mutual Insurance Co. and the owner Margo's Dinner in Belvidere. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Edenton. Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Darla Edith Powell, Clearwater, Fla., Mrs. Nancy Lee Kernodle, Charleston, S.C., Mrs. Suzanne Scott Joyner, Hampton, Va., and Mrs. I Kathleen Byrum of Edenton; one son. Douglas Scott, Chesapeake, Va.; 15 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the Williford-Byrum Funeral Chapel by Rev. Thomas Biggs.
