D AR sponsors essay contest
February will be designated as
American History Month and the
annual observance by the
Edenton Tea Party Chapter,
NSDAR, is sponsoring an essay
contest and having the first place
winners attend the February
DAR meeting to read their
essays to the members, parents,
teachers and interested friends.
Mrs. Marguerite Burch,
American History Month
Chairman, conducted the contest
in the schools of Chowan and
Perquimans County. Fifty
essays were selected by the
classroom teachers to be judged.
The topics were:
"The Contributions of Black
Soldiers or Patriots During the
Revolution" or "The Statue of
Liberty ? The Lady With a
Lamp."
The first place winners will be
guests of the chapter at Boswell's
Restaurant and will receive
certificates of award on
February 13.
The constest is sponsored
annually for students in grades
five through eight. The DAR
aims to encourage patriotism,
provide further motivatin for
children to become familiar with
historical events, and promote
growth and appreciation of our
American Heritage.
The original essays have been
sent to the District Director to be
judged on higher levels.
