LOCALNEWS Local briefs Public hearing set A state Department of Trans portation (NCDOT) proposal to four-lane a 5.7-mile section of US-17 between Hertford and Woodville in Perquimans County will be discussed at a public meeting June 4. The meeting will be lieid from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Perquimans County ? Courthouse. The public is invited to attend, ask questions or make com ments about the proposed pro ject. Additional questions, statements or comments may be submitted to C.D. Adkins, manager of planning and re search, NCDOT, P.O. Box 25201, Raleigh, N.C. 27611. Dance workshop slated An eight-week summer dance workshop, directed by Marsha Atkins, will begin on June 17 and run through August 7. Classes will be held at the Hert ford Lions Club Building. Classes are being offered in ballet, tap, jazz, and pointe. A $5.00 registration fee is required and will apply to fall registra tion. The summer dance workshop is for the serious student who wishes to stay in shape through the summer and maybe get ahead for the fall-winter season. The building is air-condi tioned. Grand Jury hands down indictments By TIM BRYANT Eight indictments involving sexual offenses were handed down by the Perquimans County Grand Jury in the May session of Superior Court. Marvin Ray Etheridge of 214 South Church Street was charged with two counts of sex ual offense. Mary Lucille Etheridge of 214 South Church Street was charged with three counts of ac cessory after the fact to sex of fense. Curtis Edward Etheridge, also of 214 South Church Street, was indicted on a charge of sex ual offense and on two counts of rape. The Honorable Judge William Griffin presided over the Supe rior Court hearings for the week of May 6,1985. The following de cisions were made: ?Fred Harris, alias Floyd A. Grace, was convicted of selling and de livering a controlled substance. A charge of obtaining property under false pretenses was dis missed. ? Denise Diane Banks was found not guilty of assualt with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. ? Darryl Craig Colson was charged with first degree bur glary, but pled guilty to feloni ous breaking and entering and felonious larceny after breaking and entering. Colson was sen tenced to a three-year term at the North Carolina Department of Corrections for each convic tion. In cases related to Colson's, Michael Duke Ivey and Steven White were both charged with first degree burglary. Ivey re ceived a three year sentence for felonious breaking or entering and a three year sentence for felonious larceny after breaking and entering. White was sen tenced to a two year sentence for the same crimes. Area obituaries HOLLOWELL TYNER, NC? Ralph Algie Hollow el J, 24, a native of Cho wan County, died Thursday, May 16 in his home. He was employed at United Piece Dye Work and was a member of Ballards Bridge Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Nixon Hollowell , his par ents, Viola Chappell Hollowell and J.H. Hollowell of Tyner; a daughter, Wendy Nacole Hollo well, and a son, Travis Wade Hollowell, both of Tyner; a sis ter, Gloria Hollowell of Roanoke Rapids; and a brother, John Hollowell of Tyner. Funeral services were con ducted at 4 p.m. Saturday in Ballards Bridge Baptist Church by the Rev. George Cooke. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Williford-Barham Fu neral Home, Edenton, was in charge. ROUNTREE Sarah "Sallie" White Roun tree, 82, of Route 1, Belvidere, died Friday afternnon, May 17 in Albemarle Hospital. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late John Lanty and Mary E. Stallings White and the widow of Jamie M. Rountree. She was a member of Up River Friends meeting where she was a member of the Elizabeth White Missionary Society and was a Life Member of the Wom en's Society of the N.C. Funeral services were held Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Up River Firends Meeting with the Rev. Rendal Cosan officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Swindell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Travis White, Marvin Gregory, Ber nard Winslow, Carson Wislow, Nelson Lane and Alec Winslow. REID WASHINGTON, D.C. Mildred T. Reid died recently at her residence. A native of Hertford, she was the daughter of the late Zeb Taylor and Mrs. Susie Hoffler Taylor. Survivors include her mother, Mrs. Susie Taylor of Washing ton, D.C.: three brothers, Wil liam Taylor, Irving Taylor and George Taylor, all of Washing ton; three aunts, Bernice and Olive Hoffler, and Dollie Whid bee, all of Rt. 3, Hertford. A funeral was conducted Thrusday, May 16, at Mt. Ver non Baptist Church. Burial was in a local cemetery. The Latney Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. COFFIELD JACKSONVILLE, FLA.? Wal lace Mitchell Coffield, 60, of 405 Winslow recognized Bobby Winslow has been nom inated as an Outstanding Young Man of America for 1985, an honor that recognizes young men throughout the nation for professional achievement and community services. He is married to the former Brenda Roberts and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Winslow. The Winslows reside at Rt. 4, Hertford. Sago Ave., died Monday morn ing, May 20 in his home A native of Hertford he was the son of the late Kader B. and Mary Mitchell Cof field and the husband of Mrs. Virginia Hay den Cof field He was the body shop manager for Feraandian Beach Ford Motor Co. in Jack sonville, a Baptist and a mem ber of the Lion's Club. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. Besides his wife survivors in clude one daughter, Mrs. Mar cia Tapper of Sioux City, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Helen C. Daven port of Chesapeake, Va. ; and three grandchildren. Graveside services will be held today at 2:00 p.m. in Ce darwood Cemetery with the Reverend Raymond Needham officiating. Everything shapes up toward it being the best camporee ever held. The new district patch has been ordered and officials are in hopes to have it for the campo ree.
