Other individuals may be providing child care oo a temporary or permanent basis, perhaps for the first time. What many of them may not know is that, by law, anyone providing day care for more than one child must either be registered with, or licensed by, the N C Office of Child Day Care Licensing. In 1971, the N.C. General As sembly enacted a law which re quires licensing of day-care fa cilities under minimum standards. It also requires reg istration of day-care plans too small to be regulated through li censing. The purpose of the law is to protect the growing number of children who are cared by by persons other than, their par ents, grandparents, guardians or full-time custodians during the day or night. A "day-care plan" includes any day-care program or child care arrangement in which any person provides day care for more than one child and fewer than six children at any one time, wherever operated and whether or not operated for profit. The school-age children of the plan operator or provider are not included in the number, but preschool-age children must be counted. The person who is reg istered must be the individual who is actually providing care on site for the children. During the school year, a day care plan operator may provide after-school care for up to three additional children, who are school-age, for up to four after school hours per day. There is no fee for registering a day-care plan. Not register ing, exceeding the limit of chil dren being cared for, or violat ing any other requirement for registered plans is a misdemea nor punishable by a fine not to exceed 150, imprisonment for not more than 30 days, or both. Registered day-care plans may receive wtyahonal serv ices through the Office of Child Day Care lirfmsing. The registration system helps to identify day-care plans and to provide an accurate count of children placed in day-care re sources. If you are providing day care and are not registered, call or write the Office of Child Day Car Licensing, 1919 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27807, (919) 733-4801. Registration must be renewed every two years. The Office of Child Day Care Licensing exists to protect chil dren in day care and to assist day-care opeators in providing the best care possible for young sters.
