COMMUNITY MR. AND MRS. JEFFREY PERRY Elliott-Perry repeat marriage vows PERRY-ELLIOTT Nancy Lynne Elliott and Jef frey Dean Perry were married June 22 at 2 o'clock in Woodville Baptist Church by the Rev. Jo seph Scalf and the Rev. Kendall Hastings. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. Henry Elliott Jr. of Route 3, Hertford. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Perry Jr. of Route 4, Hertford. Given in marriage by her par ents, the bride wore a country style floor length sleeveless dress of chiffon completed with a soft ruffle at the hemline. She wore a wreath of flowers in her hair. Miss Monica Roach of Hert ford was the maid of honor. Ronnie Hite of Belvidere was best man. Ushers were Joe El liott of Hertford, brother of the bride, and Aubrey Onley of Hertford, cousin of the bride groom. Flower girl was Chrissa El liott of Hertford. Ring bearer was Master Russell Eure III, also of Hertford. Karen Peterson of Elizabeth City was Mistress of Ceremo nies. Wedding music was provided by Matthew Elliott, soloist, of Elizabeth City, cousin of the bride; and Sylvia Berry of Hert ford, organist. A reception was held in the church social hall. After a wedding trip to Nags Head, Mr. and Mrs. Perry will be making their home at Route 4, Hertford. Engagement announced ROUNTREE-BELL Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Roun tree Sr. of Route 4, Hertford, announce the engagement of their daughter, Sheila F. Roun tree, to Rodney K. Bell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Bell of New Bern, N.C. The bride-elect is a graduate of Perquimans High School and College of The Albemarle. She is employed at Albemarle Hos pital. The prospective bridegroom is a graduate of New Bern Senior High School and Wayne Com munity College in Goldsboro, N.C. He is employed with the N.C. Forest Service. A wedding has been set for July 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Woodville Baptist Church. All friends and relatives are invited to attend. Summer veggies make versatile dishes : Okra, eggplant, and tomatoes are three outstanding and versi tile summer vegetables. The combinations are limitless and possibilities delicious. Taste these two fresh vegeta ble dishes while the summer bounty is at its peak. Summer Okra and Tomatoes 1 cup okra, cut in Vi" slices Vz cup chopped onion cup chopped green pepper 3 Tbsp. butter or bacon fat 4 tomatoes, quartered and peeled 1 tsp. salt y? tsp. pepper 1 cup fresh corn (optional) Saute okra, onion and green pepper in fat over low heat. Add tomatoes and seasonings. Cook until tender, stirring as little as possible. One cup fresh corn may be added. May be prepared in advance. Serves 4. Eggplant With Tomatoes 1 medium size eggplant, about 1 pound 4 medium-size tomatoes, about 1 pound 2 tsp. finely minced garlic Vt tsp. rosemary Vi tsp. oregano salt to taste freshly ground pepper 6 Tbsp. olive oil 1 Tbsp. finely chopped parsley Preaheat oven to 450 degrees. Trim end of eggplant. Cut eggplant lengthwise in half. Place halves, cut side down on flat surface and cut crosswise into half -moon shapes, about one-third inch thick, about 34 slices. Trim off ends of toamtoes and cut away the cores. Cut toma toes crosswise into slices each about Vi" thick. There should be about 32 pieces. Not o Sideline." mato slices with eggplant slices and arrange them compactly in a baking dish. Combine garlic, rosemary and aregano and sprinkle over lay ered eggplant. Sprinkle with salt and pepper and dribble oil over all. Place dish in the oven and bake 90 minutes. Baste the lay ered eggplant with any juices that have accumulated around it. Sprinkle with parsley and serve. Yield: 4 servings. SCS celebrates 50th Anniversary More than 600 people turned out to celebrate the USDA Soil Conservation Service's (SCS) 50th Anniversary. Conservation leaders from across the nation met at the birthplace of Hugh Hammond Bennett, founder and first Chief of SCS, near Wades boro. Representative William Hefner (D-8th District), keynote speaker at the event, state his support for the nation's soil and water conservation efforts, "The soil conservation porgram has for SO years assured the ma intenace of rich, productive farmland for the growing of abundant crops to feed this na tion and the world. "The benefits of this program are no less today, and we must continue to build upon the work that Dr. Bennett put forth for the everlasting betterment of mankind." Supporting a strong federal conservation effort, Hefner said, "I believe we must continue funding for the soil conservation programs instead of cutting them drastically as proposed in the FY -86 budget. " Frank H. Jeter Jr., represent ing the North Carolina Associa tion of Soil and Water Conserva tion Districts, read a joinli resolution of the North Carolina General Assembly that had been passed that day. In addition to saluting the Soil Conservation Service on its 50th Anniversary and recognizing the conservation acievements of the past 50 years, it called foe continued national, state and lor cal support for these efforts. | Also, as part of the activities, the Anson County Soil Survey was lucked off with its first acre ceremony. Soil surveys provide landusers with detailed informa tion about soil locations and lim itations for various uses.
