During the past year, the Escheat and Abandoned Property Program administered by the Department of the State Treasurer turned over $451,458 to rightful owners of unclaimed and abandoned property, State Trea surer Harlan Boyles said today in announcing the initiation of a similar effort for the current year. North Carolina law provides that unclaimed and abandoned money and other property be col lected, where its owners cannot be found, and paid into the Es cheat and Abandoned Property Program for specified educatio nal purposes. Before this is done, however, every effort is made to locate the rightful owner. For this effort, the State Treasurer is again asking for help from the State's newspapers, and is pro viding to the papers lists of names and last known addresses of the people in question. "In the past," Boyles said, "the assis tance of our newspapers has proved invaluable in locating a large number of people who do not know they have money com ing to them." State law provides that the lists of names of people owning un claimed property be sent to each Clerk of Court in North Carolina, where they will be made avail able for public inspection. "De spite this effort by the Clerks "Boyles said, "many people never become aware of the exis tence of the lists." To help solve the problem, the Treasurer's of fice each year seeks the aid of the news media in publicizing the re fund effort. "In past years, "he said, "this widespread publicity has been of major help to us in reuniting property with its lawful owners, and I am hopeful that we may again count on the aid of our papers in promoting this worth while project." Last year, the treasurer said, some 85-90 per cent of the State's papers printed stories, and with gratifying suc cess. In response to a number of in quiries he has received, Boyles pointed out that there is absolu tely no need for people believing that they have refunds due them to employ any sort of profes sional assistance to recover the money. "All we need," he said, "is for the individual in question to contact this Department and provide us with reasonable proof that the money is his. Upon pre sentation of such proof, we will do the rest." Those who learn that there is unclaimed property being held in their names by the State Trea surer are asked to write to the Abandoned Property Office, De partment of State Treasurer, 325 North Salisbury Street, Raleigh, North Carolina 27611, or call (919) 733-4440. No time limit ap plies to inquiries or claims, as re funds will be made promptly whenever ownership is estab lished.
