LOCALNEWS^ Library grammar school, and the whole wooden building was given far use of the library. When the grammar school burned in ISM the brick lunch room waa not damaged, and when the school was reopened in another part of town the brick lunchroom waa given over entirely to the library. A bookmobile was put into operation going through the county taking books and mag azines to the elderly, to chil dren and others who could not come to the library. Before this time a state-wide library system was organized and financial aid was given to each county that partici pated. A bill that established this was largely the work of Sen ator Charles Whedbee who travelled over the entire state talking to each member of the legislature to interest them in statewide support of public li braries. Some years later this county took over the entire lo cal support of the library and spent about $50,000 in renova tions of the building, adding a wing, new shelves and fur nishings. In addition to state aid and county funds, the Per quimans County Library was made one of the beneficiaries of the Thomas G. Skinner Trust Fund, set up by the heirs of T.G. Skinner, a for mer resident of the county. This money was designated for the purpose of purchasing books. With this and state aid and county funds the collec tion of books grew rapidly. In its 50 years the Perqui mans County Library Board has had only four people serv tag as chairman-Mrs. Earl Perry, Mist Mae Wood Winslow, Mrs. Howard Pitt and Mr*. John Biggers, its present chairman. Under their leadership the Perqui mans County Library has come a long way. In 1971 the library joined the Pettigrew Regional Li brary with Tyrrell, Chowan And Washington Counties. This resulted in a larger staff, longer hours of service, more books and special programs for the community. Since Perquimans County joined the region the follow ing have served as head li brarians: Wayne Henritze, Ellen Bowen and Terry Bossley. Doris Pappendick of Elizabeth City served a short interim period before Ann Lennon, the present librar ian, was hired. Throughout the years a number of volunteer and ded icated trustees have served with the already mentioned chairpersons. Old minutes re veal the following names. Mr. J.G. Tucker, Mrs. H.C. Stokes, Miss Helen Gaither, J.E. Newby, Helen W. Winslow, Mrs. Josiah Elliot, and Mr. Max Campbell. Also Mrs. Vivian Darden, Mrs. L.J. Winslow, Mrs. T.P. Brinn, Miss Thelma Elliot, and Mrs. W.C. Stroud. The present board is com prised of Mrs. John Biggers, chairperson, Mrs. Jessie Har ris, Mrs. Elaine Phillips, Mrs. Irvin Turner, Mrs. George Barbee and Mrs. Wiley Whed bee.
