(COA Photo) Commissioners hear request for computer By SUSAN HARRIS County employees Cheryl Phil lips, Keith Haskett, and Randy Keaton presented a request to purchase new computer equip ment to the County Commission ers Monday night. The group asked the Commissioners to buy an IBM 36 series computer system. On state contract the new com puter equipment, including a mainframe, three terminals, a printer, training, shipping and installation would cost the county more than $28,000.00. According to Phillips, the equipment would allow use not only by the tax and water depart ments, as with the present system, but would also be availa ble for use by the finance office and the Register of Deed's office. Phillips and Keaton reported that they had visited Chatham County which uses the IBM 36 to see how the system works. Both were certain that the system would be beneficial to the county. Chatham County expressed an interest in selling copies of its tax and financial software packages at a price substantially lower than new software. Any programming necessary to tailor the software to Perqui mans County's specific needs could be done by Phillips, who has taken numerous computer courses. The Commissioners told Kea ton to price lease agreements, and to find prospective buyers for the IBM 32 series machine present used by the tax and wa ter departments. Reports on these items, as well as software prices, will be presented at the next board meeting. Haskett told the Commission ers that the tax and water de partments' photocopier is bro ken, and cannot be fixed. Keaton said he priced several brands of copiers and found the lowest price on a Cannon MP150 at ap proximately $1,300.00. The pur chase was approved. The Board was updated on the new rescue squad building by Commissioner Thomas Nixon who is monitoring the project on behalf of the Board. Nixon was authorized to seek informal bids for the electrical installation and cement work.
