Local News Of Local Interest I Howell announces FmHA loan changes Bridge to be named HERTFORD? Acting on a re quest by Representative Vernon James, the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners voted Monday to present a resolution to the North Carolina Department of Transportation to name the bridge that crosses the Perqui mans River on U.S. 17 By-Pass in honor of the late Joseph Warren Nowell, Jr. The span, which links Hertford and Winfall, has been in use for approximately 20 years. The request will ask that it be named the Joseph W. No well, Jr. Bridge. Prior to his death in 1985, No well had served as a member of the Perquimans County Commis sioners, and was former High way Commissioner. A motion to present the resolu tion to the D.O.T. received unani mous approval of the board. Planning Board to meet There will be a meeting of the Perquimans County Planning Board on Monday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Courthouse concern ing the CAMA 1966 land use plan update. Policies discussed at the Jan. meeting on resource protec tion will be revived. Policies con cerning resource production and management will also be dis cussed. Among the areas to be reviewed include Productive Ag ricultural land, Commericial Forest land existing and poten tial mineral production Comme ricial and recreational fisheries and other areas. The public is en couraged to attend. Nursing assistant program Applications will be accepted until Feb. 21 for a Nursing Assis tant Program that will be taught in March by College of The Albe marle at Guardian Care of Eliza beth City. Fifteen applicants will be ac cepted for the 11-week program that begins on March 3rd. Roy Winslow, COA assistant dean of admissions, said that because of the limited enrollment, appli cants will be admitted to the pro gram in the order in which their completed applications are re ceived at the college admissions office. Interested persons may con tact the admissions office in A Building at the North Road Street campus, or by calling 335 0821. Free seedlings available The N.C. Forest Service will provide free pine seedling again this year. Available are Red Cedar, Lob lolly, Virginia and Longleaf Pines which can be picked up at Winfall Tower. These seedlings can soon pro vide shade in the summer and wind protection in the winter, as well as add beauty to your yard all year. Now is the time to plant. Howell, County Su pervisor, of the United States De partment of Agriculture, Farm ers Home, Administration (FmHA) in Chowan and Perqui mans Counties, announced today that major changes have taken place in its Guaranteed Loan Programs. The changes are de signed to help farmers with credit prqblfpis arrange their fi nancing far <be coming year in a timely fashion. "We have streamlined our Guaranteed Loan Procedures," said Howell. "We have expidited the entire processing operation so that farmers will be spared much of the paperwork, delay and frustration they have had to deal with in the past." The changes in the Guaranteed Loan procedures that have re cently taken place are: The establishment of Approved Lenders. Allowing a fanner to establish a "Line of Credit" with a par ticipating Lender. Accepting the approved Lend er's completed forms as much as possible. Setting time limits for complet ing the Loan Guaranteed Ap plication process. Allowing farmers to use Guar anteed Loans to refinance di rect FmHA loans. "By offering an efficient, workable Guaranteed Loan pro gram, we can provide a more beneficial service to the farm ers," said Howell. Howell stated that there are two approved Lenders providing Farm Credit in Chowan and Per quimans Counties. The Lenders Are: Peoples Bank & Trust Co., Edenton and Hertford; and (j Farm Credit Services in Eliza beth City. ; Area obituaries? MATT1E BROWN TAYLOR SPEIGHT HERTFORD? Mrs. Mattie Brown Taylor Speight, 73, of 716 Pennsylvania Ave., Hertford, died Thursday, January 30, 1986, at 3:35 a.m. in Albemarle Hospi tal, Elizabeth City. A native of Greene County, she was the wife of Will Edward Speight and the daughter fo the late Daniel Webster and Susan Newell Taylor. She was formerly a clerk with Tarkington's Ladies Shop of Edenton and was a mem ber of the Edenton United Meth odist Church and its Women's Missionary Society. Besides her husband, survi vors include a daughter, Mrs. Alva (Suzanne) Bunch of Hert ford; two sons, Will Oscar Speight, II of Abilene, Texas and John Edward Speight of Ches peake, Va.; a sister, Mrs. Floyd Heath of Swansboro; 10 grand children and 7 great-grandchil dren. Graveside services were held Sunday, February 2, at 2:30 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery, Eden ton , with the Rev. Ralph Epps officiating. Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, was in charge of Family Dollar to open store CHARLOTTE, NC-The 200th Family Dollar store in North Carolina and the 1018th in the fast-growing North Carolina based discount store chain will open in Hertford, Thursday, Feb ruary 13. . The new store, located at the intersection of Highway 17 By pass and Church Street, in Shop ping Center with Be-Lo and Revco, will open at 10 a.m. Local officials and Family Dol lar executives will take part in a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at the main entrance to the store immediately before the opening. ARVIN W. HUDSON HERTFORD? Arvin Washing ton Hudson, 65, of 222 Sunset Drive, died Friday morning, Jan uary 31, 1986, in his home. A native of Tyrrell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Wi nifred S. Hudson and the son of the late Rufus C. and Beula West Husdon. He was a retired high way inspector with the N.C. De partment of Transportation and a member of the Berea Church of Christ. Besides his wife, survivors in clude a daughter, Mrs. William Preston (Sandra) Nixon of Wil mington; two sons, W. A. "Billy" Hudson of Lawrenceville, Va. and Rufus A. Hudson of Route 2, Hertford; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Graveside services were held Sunday, February 2, at 4:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery with the Rev. Harold Turner officiating. CORPREW HERTFORD-Mrs. Maude Haskett Corprew, 94, of Route 1, Box 541-A, Hertford, died Thurs day afternoon, January 30, 1986, at 5:30 in Unit B. of Chowan Hos pital. A native of Perquimans County she was the widow of John Hardy Corprew and the daughter of the late William and Nancy Howell Haskett. She was a former seam tress with Don Juan Mfg. Co. and formerly worked as a hostess with the New Hope Rest Haven. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include Lawrence Corprew and William Corprew, both of Route 1, Hertford; 8 grandchildren; 19 great-grand children and 1 great-great grandchild. Graveside services were held Saturday, February 1, at 2:30 p.m. in Bethel Cemetery with the Rev. Gordon Shaw officiating. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. DR. CHARLES E. JOHNSON, II < BELHAVEN? Dr. Charles Ed ward Johnson, II, 47, of 526 E. Main Street, Belhaven, died Fri day, January 31, 1966, in Pitt Me morial Hospital, Greenville. A native of Perquimans County, he was the husband of Mrs. Frances Keel Johnson and the son of Charles Edward and Mary Broughton Johnson, both of Hertford. He was a dentist in Bel haven, having been there since 1966. Dr. Johnson was a graduate of Wake Forest University and the School of Dentistry? University of North Carolina. He was a member of Trinity United Meth odist Church, the Belhaven Ro tary Club and was a former member of the Belhaven Rotary ( Club and was a former member of the Belhaven Town Council. He was also secretary-treasurer of the Holland Dental Society Club, was a member of the N.C. Dental Society and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Besides his wife and parents, survivors include a daughter, Miss Stephanie Johnson of the . home; two sons, Charles E. ' "Chip" Johnson, III of Chapel Hill and Bradley Edward John son of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Rick (Vickie) MacConnell of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Dan (Gail) Daneker of CoosBay, Ore.
