Local News Of Local Interest Albemarle Hospital names new staff members ELIZABETH CITY-Robert G. Jeff ires Administrator of Al bemarle Hospital has recently announced the appointments of two new staff members; Kim Bright, L.P.T. and Michael 0. Harp. Bright, a native of Chesa peake, Va , has been named staff therapist in the Physical The rapy Dept. of the hospital. She obtained her B.S. in Physical Therapy from Old Dominion Uni versity in 1984. Harp, a native of Birmingham, Ala., has been appointed Techni cal Director of Cardiopulmonary Services. Harp attended Skyline College and an Francisco Col lege, both in San Manteo, Ca. He plans to continue his education toward a degree in Business Ad ministration. ABLE Center in need of volunteers College of The Albemarle's " ABLE Center needs volunteer tu tors for its reading program. Mary Partin, program director, says community volunteers are an integral part of the college's new Adult Basic Literacy Educa tion (ABLE) program. Partin explained that volun teers are asked to tutor once a week for three hours. "They choose a time for a specific day that they can give to the program on a regular basis," she said. Two training workshops for new volunteer tutors will be held on June 9 and 10. "Please call 335-0621, Extension 227, to volun teer your time as a reading tu tor," the director urged. The center is opened for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each Monday through Friday, and from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. every Tuesday through Thursday. Elizabeth City Jaycees to hold derby The Elizabeth City Jaycees will hold their annual Demolition Derby, Sunday, June 1 at 1:00 p.m. Trophies will be awarded for winners of each heat, and first, second, and third places in the free-for-all and final heats. Prize money will be awarded which includes a $500 grand prize. For more information concern ing rules and entry forms, con tact any Elizabeth City Jaycee. General admission for the event will be $6 for adults and $3 for children. Come early to the Jay cee Fairgrounds on Chruch Street Extended for a good time. Chowan Hospital commended for efforts The American Hospital Asso ciation (AHA) commends Cho wan Hospital for its continuing efforts to control costs and in crease productivity. This facility was awarded the 1965-86 HAS Certificate of Recognition for be ing an active member of HAS MONITREND. HAS-MON ITREND is a comparative opera tional monitoring system, of fered by AHA's Hospital Administrative Services Division ( HAS ) , that assist hospitals in re ducing costs while maintaining the quality of medical services. According to Marvin A. Bryan, Hospital Director, "Using HAS MONITREND to assess our oper ational performance helps us keep our costs in line with Medi care prices. Participating in this program puts us in a better posi tion to provide high quality care to all patients as efficiently as possible." Chowan Hospital demonstrates its commitment to provide high quality health care services while controlling costs and im proving staff productivity through its voluntary partici pation in the MONITREND pro gram. MONITREND data is used regularly to make manage ment decisions for budgeting, staffing, and service. Keever holds seminar at hospital The Rev. Evelyn Keever, Chaplain at Childrens' Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Nor folk, conducted a seminar on "The Sudden, Unexpected Death of a Child" Monday, May 12, at Chowan Hospital. Speaking to the hospital chap lains and area ministers. Mrs. Keever's talk focused on the min ister's role in helping a family to cope following the death of their child. The program was one of two continuing education programs sponsored annually by Chowan Hospital for the volunteer chap lains. The Rev. James Fenner pre sided over the short business meeting of the chaplains prior to Mrs. Keever's presentation. The Open Door is seeking donations The Perquimans Open Door is seeking donations of building supplies needed to build a struc ture to house the food supplies which Open Door collects for the needy. Needed are seventeen 2x4x12; twenty 2x4x8; nine sheets of V4 inch plywood and in sulation for a 12 foot structure. Insulation is needed to avoid de terioration of the food in freezing weather. Volunteers have already of fered their labor and are ready to begin work a soon as the materi als are available. Anyone wishing to donate sup plies or funds with which these supplies can be purchased should contact Miriam Haskett at 426 5620 no later than Monday, May 26, 1966. Smathers to conduct seminar EDENTON? Nancy Smathers, training specialiist with the N.C. Department of Community Col lege, will return on Tuesday, June 3 to present another semi nar for local residents. The free, evening workshop, "Job Attitudes and Human Rela tions," is co-sponsored by the Edenton Chamber of Commerce and College of The Albemarle's Small Business Center. It will be gin at 7 p.m. in the Unit A class room at Chowan Hospital. Smathers has become well known to local residents. She pre viously has led self-improvement workshops here that dealt with stress management and personal profiles. She earned her bachelor's de gree from Adelphi University, and a master's degree from George Washington University. Smathers also is a graduate of the Wake Forest University Law School where she earned her ju ris doctorate degree. The evening seminar at the hospital focuses on the manner in which one's attitudes, behavior, and values affects and values af fects an individual's ability to re late well with others in both per sonal and job situations. Emphasis will be placed upon the development of positive listening and speaking skills, how positive attitudes produce positve results, and how one's perception affects understanding of others. Thank you, Sheriff "Little Man" Broughton Association honors Pritchard, Underwood I Elaine Pritchard and Paige Underwood, Hertford, were among the 30 volunteers honored at the American Heart Associa tion, North Carolina Affiliate's 37 tli Annual meeting, Delegate Assembly and Scientific Ses sions, May 16-17 at the Winston Plaza, Winston Salem. Pritchard and Underwood each received the Ten Year Serv ice Award which is awarded to volunteers who have rendered 10 or more years of continuous and outstanding service in two or more of the Affiliate's major areas of interest. These interests include fund raising, community programs, publicity or adminis tration. The award is a bronze medallion with an easel bearing the recipient's name. Pritchard has conducted a va riety of events and fund raisers for the Perquimans County Heart Association at Perqui mans High School over the past 10 years. Underwood has been active conducting Heart Sunday cam paigns in the rural areas of Per quimans County. The 37th Annual Meeting of Delegates brought together more than ISO medical and non-medi cal volunteer leaders from across the state to share ideas, g discuss policy and recognize ^ achievements. Service news ARMY PRIVATE L1NWOOD PARKER, JR. Army Private Linwood Par ker, Jr., son of Linwood and Mar tha Parker of Rural Route 4, Hertford, N.C., has arrived for duty with the 59th Ordinance Bri gade, West Germany. Parker, a military police spe cialist, is a 1985 graduate of Per quimans County High School, Hertford. Area obituaries JOHN M. LANE John Martin Lane, 92, formerly of Route 2, Hertford, died Tues day, May 13, 1966, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of the late Isaac and Harriett Lane and the hus band of the late Annie Alexander Lane. He was a retired farmer and a member of Central Baptist Church in Portsmouth, Va. Survivors include four daugh ters, Mrs. Harry (Thelma) Smith of Route 2, Hertford, Mrs. Alma Hurdle of Elizabeth City, Mrs. W.B. (Julia) Weston of Virginia Beach, Va. and Mrs. Selma Gib son of Portsmouth, Va.; three sons, Calvin J. Lane of Route 3, Hertford, Preston E. Lane and Clyde C. Lane, both of Hampton, Va.;1 a half-brother, Carey I. Lane of Portsmouth, Va; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grand children and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Thursday at 3:00 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. U.G. Robertson, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiat ing. Burial followed in the Lane Family Cemetery. Pallbearers were J. Lawrence Perry, Ernest Elliott Morgan, Lloyd Lane, Emment Lane, Ju lian Matthews and James White. PATRICIA S. STONE HERTFORD? Patricia Spruill Stone, 49, of Route 4, Box 783, Hertford, N.C., died Sunday eve ning, May 18, 1986, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County she was the wife of Doyle V. Stone, Sr. and the daughter of Neil Spruill of Chesapeake, Va. and the late Pauline Dail Spruill. She formerly worked as a driver for the InterCounty Transporta tion System and was a member of New Hope United Methodist Church. Besides her husband and fa ther, survivors include four daughters, Mr. Kathy Taber of Mobile, Ala., Mrs. Brenda Dail of Kitty Hawk, Mrs. April Colson of Rt. 4, Hertford and Mrs. Robin ^ Bridgers of Winfall; a son, Doyle Vincent Stone, Jr. of Hertford; three brothers, Carlton Spruill, Dail Spruill and Marion Spruill, all of Chesapeake, Va.; and 11 grandchildren.
