N.C. 27944 New faces claim victories at Dixieland Rodney Brickhouse of Chesa peake, Va. surprised everyone as he took top honors in the Bud weiser Sportsman Division at Dixieland Friday night in the WKJX sponsored event. Heat races were held to deter mine starting positions for the Coots Super Street and the Bud weiser Sportsman Divisions. In the first heat of the evening Louis White of Roper, NC led all eight laps followed by Ken Winslow of Smith Mills, NC and Ed Parsain of Portsmouth, Va. second and third respectively. Tommy Cherry of South Mills, NC led from start to finish to capture the second heat in the Coors Super Street Division. In the Budweiser Sportsman heats Joe "the Outlaw" Gaita of Hampton, VA took the first heat followed by Bubba Adams and Bert Culpepper of Chesapeake, Va. Defending track champion, Mike Buffkin of Tabb, Va., cap tured top honors in the second heat followed by Roger Hicks and Bill Brickhouse of Cheap eake, Va. The Mighty Mini Division time trialed for positions and Bobby Cahoon had the fastest time of the evening. Cahoon took com mand of the event and never re linquished the lead, thus winning the fifteen lap event. Following Cahoon across the finish line were Rick Karn, Rick Lake, Fred Parsain, and Kip Lindell re spectively. Next, the Economy Street Divi sion was lined up to take to the % mile oval for twenty laps of rac ing action. Ted Midgett of Hatte ras, NC and Greg Gregory of Shi loh, NC tat on the front row. Gregory took an early lead at the drop of the green flag and contin ued to lead the entire event. The race was run almost caution free except for a spin by Jamie Sid dens on lap fourteen. At the checkered it was Gregory getting his first feature win of the year, followed by Ted Midgett, Chris Perry, Jim Burbage, and Kelly Upton. During track inspection at the end of the event, Ted Midg ett and Tony Sawyer were dis qualified due to illegal cams. The Coors Super Street Divi sion anxiously anticipated their turn to race on the % mile oval. Winslow put the pressure on Cherry for the lead and both cars tangled with Cherry getting the worst of it and Johnny Conner of Buxton took over the lead on lap sixteen. Conner held on for the win followed by Grover Sanders, Ed Parsain, Keith Sawyer, and Stephen Etheridge. After techni cal inspection, Conner was dis qualified due to illegal cam thus giving the win to last year's Economy Street Champion, Grover Sanders. In the final event of the evening the Budweiser Sportsman were lined up their fifty lap feature. Joe Gaita had the pole position with defending track champion Mike Buffkin along side. Off turn four came seventeen screaming machines as they each jockeyed for positions. Gaita made it look easy as his machine pulled away i from Bubba Adams, Mike Buf fkin, and Bert Culpepper in the early stages of the race. It looked to be the night would belong to Gaita when a tie rod end snapped and sent him into the turn one wall thus ending his hopes of his second feature win here at Dixie land. On the restart it was Bubba Adams taking control of the race being chased by Buffkin, Rodney Brickhouse and Earl Sawyer. On lap thirty-three awyer passed Brickhouse on the outside and be gan to challenge Buffkin and Ad ams. On lap forty-six, Adams and Buffkin tangled thus result ing in Adams spinning in turn four and Buffkin received the \ black flag for rough driving, thus sending both drivers to the rear. Earl Sawyer tried to avoid the in cident between the two leaders :i thus allowing the fourth place | car of Rodney Brickhouse to slip by and take over the first place honors. J.D. Sanders and Jay Bray also slipped around Earl Sawyer during the incident. Sanders make several attempts to pass Brickhouse, but it was not to be as Rodney Brickhouse be came the fifth driver in five races to win a feature in the Bud weiser Sportsman event. At the end of fifty laps Brickhouse got the win followed by J.D. Sander, Jay Bray, Earl Sawyer and Bubba Adams. WALK-A-THON ?
