Sports Meads' claim top prize in tourney The second Annual "Pride of Perquimans" Bass Tournament was held Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with Walter Meads and Kevin Meads, both of Elizabeth City, claiming the $500.00 first prize. The annual event, sponsored by the Perquimans County Parks and Recreation Department's Advisory Committee attracted twenty-two teams from the northeastern part of the state. The Meads team not only had the top total weight (27 lb6. 7 oz.). They also had the largest bass weighing 7 lbs. 1 oz. The second place team Bob Williams and Greg Hodges, both from Rocky Mount, claimed a prize of $250.00 for their total catch weighing 25 lbs. The third place team, Bunch and White had a total weight of 21 lbs. 3 oz. and were awarded Bray a dominant force at Dixieland Friday night at Dixieland James Bray of Elizabeth City, became the first Budwieser Sportsman driver to capture two feature events this year. Bray picked up his victory driving a new car that his car owner Wayne Perry had purchase the day before the event from Joe "the Cutlaw" Gaita. Bray was fastest qualifier of the evening thus giving him the pole position on the 50 lap event. Jay Bray, brother to James Bray was sec ond fastest qualifier which left brother to brother in the early going. On lap 27 Mike Buffkin of Tabb, Va. slipped by Jay Bray and set his sights on James Bray. Buffkin tapped the rear of Bray's machine several times in the closing laps hoping to rattle the veteran driver to no avail. Mean while, brother Jay Bray was hav ing pressure placed on him by Chespeake's own Bert Culpepper and right behind Bert was the Miller American machine of J.D. Sanders. At the end of 50 laps it was James Bray, Mike Buffkin, Jay Bray, Bert Culpeper and J.D. Sanders. In the Coors Super Street fea ture, Ken Winslow of South Mills and Jimmy McKinney of Shiloh, both past winners at Dixieland, entertained the crowd with an ex citing thirty laps of action. Winslow started on the pole and led all the way, but McKinney seemed to be attached to his bumper as the two cars circled the oval track. In the end Winslow picked up his second win and McKinney finished sec ond. Johnny Conner, also a past winner at Dixieland, took home third. Rounding out the top five were Louis White of Plymouth in fourth place and Keith Sawyer of Virginia Beach in fifth. The Economy Street Division also saw the first two-time win no- of this season with Ted Midg ett of Hatteras picking up top honors. It was Midgett's race all the way as he easily led from start to finish. Jim Burbage, of Bath, NC seemed to have second place wrapped up until Virgil Frazier of Elizabeth City took over the spot on the nineteenth of twenty laps, thus placing Bur bage in third place. Fourth across the finish line was Chris Perry of Elizabeth City and fifth was John Staton of Chesapeake. Thomas Chappell of Elizabeth City picked up his first Mighty Mini feature of the year driving his Toyota . Bobby Cahoon of Nor folk, Va. challenged Chappell for most of the event but had to settle for second in the 15 lap event. Le roy Farrow managed to take home a third place finish with Rick Kara and Fred Parsain fin ishing fourth and fifth. In a special 10 lap Go-Kart fea ture David Martin won the Sportsman class followed by Doug Byars. In the stock class Jeff Jackson was the top finisher followed by Wayne Byrum and Jim Cahoon. White Perch in Lake Phelps EDENTON-Local sport fish ermen may be glad to know that Lake Phelps was recently stocked with 36,000 white perch fingerlings. According to North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission fishery biologists, nearly all white perch in Lake Phelps were killed during the serveree winter of 1960 and have failed to come back on their own. "Fishermen used to catch cool ers of white perch in Lake Phelps", said Pete Kornegay, a Commission's biologist, "but since the winter of 1960 probably less than a dozen have been caught. This stocking of finger lings hopefully will give the white perch a boost in reestablishing themselves." Adult white perch were ob tained from commercial fisher men on the Chowan River during March and transported to the Wildlife Commission's Fayette ville Fish Hatchery. The young fish were spawned and reared to a size of one to two inches in hatchery ponds, then transported to Lake Phelps for stocking Raising fish to fingerlings in ponds greatly increases their chances for survival upon stock ing.
