Health Department advises cleaning of family medicine cabinets There is one place in the home which is often neglected when it ' comes to cleaning? the medicine cabinet. However, keeping this area free of old and outdated medications is extremely impor tant according to Howard Camp bell, director of the Pasquotank Perquimans-Camden-Chowan District Health Department. "Medicine cabinets are noto rious for being catch-alls for an assortment of ointments and bot tles containing a variety of pills and liquids," Mr. Campbell said. "But they can be extremely dangerous, especially if there are small children or older adults with poor vision staying in the home." He offered the following sug gestions for cleaning out the medicine cabinet and disposing of unused medicine: clean the medicine cabinet at least once every year throw out unsued prescription medicine if it has not been used in a year. Some medicines dete riorate over time and become ei ther ineffective or possibly dan gerous because of chemical changes; check over-the-counter medica tions and throw out any that have passed their expriation date; flush down the toilet any unused or out-of-date medications, in cluding the contents of tubes; Kings Dominion tickets The Recreation Department is now selling discount tickets to Kings Dominion. The tickets which regularly sell for $14.95 may be purchased for $10.95 at the Recreation Department. "After cleaning out your medi cine cabinet, arrange it based on your needs and convenience," Mr. Campbell said. "It may also help to keep internal and exter nal medications separate." He noted that while many peo pie keep a clutter of pills and tubes in their medicine cabinet, they sometimes lack any good first aid item. "It's a good idea to have ban dages, sterile cotton balls, petro leum jelly, rubbing alcohol, anti septics to clean cuts, calamine lotion, and a thermometer on hand," Mr. Campbell said.
