Church Sunday School Lesson Prophets were God's messengers GOD'S TESTS OF A TRUE PROPHET (Jeremiah 23:16-23; 28:5-16) "Thus saith the Lord, God of hosts, hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you; they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of God." (Jeremiah 3: ;16) The prophets of the Old Testa ment were men and women who were called of God to speak to the people for God. They were His messengers. Not only did they fortell of future events, they told forth God's word for the immedi ate and the present. In a sense, they were preachers. They did not have the Bible as we have to day. They spoke the truths which God gave to them by word, dreams or visions. There were many prophets in Judah and Je Expression of Affection let us help you choose a beauti ful memorial to appropriately perpetuate the memory of a loved one. Call or come by soon! Some were true prophets of God, yet Jeremiah himself seems to have been a lone figure at that time. There were false prophets as well. They spoke their own mes sages, claiming, of course, that they came from God. Jeremiah preached God's message of re pentance and reconciliation amidst the evils of a nation whose people were bent on de struction. The problem for the people in such a setting was to determine which prophet to heed and follow. God, through Jeremiah, would point out the characteristics of true and false prophets, which is our lesson for today. MARKS OF FALSE PROPH ETS. (Jeremiah 23:16-18) "They speak a vision of their own heart and not out of the mouth of the Lord. (Verse 16) Has there ever been a time in history without false representa tives of God? When people who claim to be God's spokesman de lude multiplied thousands, de ceive the unwary, souls are lost. They speak only what people want to hear. They indeed do speak of God's love, grace, mercy, forgiveness, salvation, etc., and well they should. But they leave off warn ing their audiences of God's judgement against sin. One writer said that the worst kind of charlatan is the religious fraud. The question today is the same as during Jeremiah's day? "Whose voice do you hearken to?" PROPHECY? IT'S MOTIVA TION AND MESSAGE (Jeremiah 23:21-22) "I have not sent these proph ets, yet they ran: I have not spo ken to them yet they proph esied." (Verse 21) There are two distinct areas in which the true prophet and the false prophet differ. One of these is motivation. The other is mes sage. True prophets are called of God; that's motivation enough in itself. Ik 7ftemvUa*K to- 'fcilttf TVfct TVdUtuttA. *)*) 1U /kt44<tpc o? a <ftA* fou not U<hwud t&t, full* <x^ tot ttCUiCHfy <fQ? ?4. The second difference is in their respective messages. The true prophet gets his messages from God. The message of proph ets during Jeremiah's time was of peace. They ignored the moral and spiritual degraduation into which the people had fallen. De cades earlier, during the day of the prophet Micah, Judah asked the prophet what God wanted from them. Micah replied, "To do justice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with God." GOD'S PROPHET IS CHAL LENGED (Jeremiah 28:5, 9, 15, 16) Given the fact of Jeremiah's persistance as a servant of God, it is inevitable that he would be challenged. Any person who is faithful to God may expect this. The challenge came from the false prophet Hananiah, before the priests and the people in the house of the Lord. Jeremiah said to Hananiah, ' 'The Lord hath not sent thee ; but thou makes this people to trust in a lie." (Verse 16) It is a danger ous game to play indeed, for one to choose to thwart God's will and purpose. God brought imme diate judgement upon Hananiah. Verse 16 records it, "Behold I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die." (Lesson based on the Interna tional Sunday School Lessons.) Three barrels of spilled oil will create a two-square mile slick on the ocean. "Let the Bees Drive It" Have you ever been driving along and suddenly a big bee zooms all around your head? You open the window hoping the bee will go out, but the wind drives him to the back seat where he can sneak up on you again. Often the best defense is to pull over and say, "Mr. Bee, if you want the car, it's all yours." In the eighteenth chapter of Genesis Abraham has a similar circumstance. God has warned that He is going to destroy Sodom & Gomarrah. Abraham questions God ,"will you destroy the city if there are righteous people there?" God's reply, "Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?" It would seem the obvious answer illuded Abraham "Let's take the righteous out of the city." Jesus has said, "Christians are the salt of the earth." Salt is a preservative, but why should we want to pre serve something so rotten as Sodom & Gomarrah? When food beginst to spoil no amount of preservative can re verse the trend. I hear so many TV and movie stars, enter tainment people saying God has called them to their vo cation; sleasy, obscene parts, hard gospel rock, beauty contests, hogwash! What I see them doing is becoming the vehicle for keeping a dying Sodom & Gomarrah alive. True Christians are called out from the world, not in there as the life blood of the world. Jesus did not become a Pharisee, or a Saducee or a priest in the temple to witness to them. He was separated from them and drew them out. Likewise Paul gave up the wealth and power of being a Pharisee of the Pharisees to continue as a Christian. We Christians need to separate ourselves from evil, stop fooling ourselves and promoting evil. Its like parking your car and telling the bee he can have it. "Wherefore, come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord." (II Corinthians 6:17) George Milmore, Pastor Mt. Sinai Baptist Church. People's Bank & Trust Co. MEMBER FDIC Hertford, N.C. At o funeral, many per sons choose to express their sympathy by sending flow ers. The beauty and tender ness that flowers add to an otherwise stark setting is un deniable. A memorial to a church or charity is also very commendable. It is proper for the bereaved family to suggest a certain memorial, however this does not deny to the donor his choice for expressing sympathy and re spect.
