Bethel Fire Dept. awarded grant The Bethal Volunteer Fire De partment is one of 109 volunteer fire departments in North Caro lina will receive matching fund grants as part of the Rural Com munity Fire Protection Pro gram. North Carolina received $68,635 in federal grant funds for the program for fiscal year 1986. The money will be used to pur chase a variety of firefighting equipment ranging from "turn out gear" (helmets, coats and boots) and hoses, to pumps and pumper trucks. The Bethel Department re ceived a $485.00 grant. "Volunteer fire departments are important to North Caro lina," said Harry F. Layman, di rector of the N.C. Division of For est Resources. These volunteer fire departments were very in strumental in fighting fires this past spring, he said. Volunteer fire departments in teres ted in receiving grants must file an application with the Divi sion of Forest Resources that shows the department's need for the funds. In addition, volunter fire departments must be able to match the grant received. To qualify for the Rural Com munity Fire Protection Pro gram, volunteer fire depart ments must serve fewer than 10,000 people. The program is ad ministered by the Division of Forest Resources and the U.S. Forest Service. r Understanding alerts Thanks to modern detection and tracking devices, the Na tional Weather Service can usually give 12 to 24 hours of earning of an impending hurri cane landfall. A Hurricane Watch is issued when a hurricane becomes a threat to coastal areas. Every one in the area covered by the watch should listen for further advisories and be prepared to act promptly if advised to do so. A Hurricane Warning indicates that hurricane winds of 74 miles per hour or higher or a combina tion dangerously high water and very rough seas are expected in a specific coastal area within 24 hours. Safety actions must begin immediately. The National Weather Service issues hurricane probabilities as part of its official advisories as a hurricane approaches the U.S. Such probabilities (expressed as percentages) are issued four times a day and are used by local govermental officials to make emergency decisions and give you emergency preparedness in structions. The probabilities are defined as the chance in per cent that the center of the storm will pass within approximately 65 miles of 44 selected locations from Brownsville, Texas to Eastport, Maine. As a hurricane approaches the U.S., you may be informed of those probabilities over tele vision, radio, or in the newspa per. As a hurricane moves to ward land, a probability percentage is assigned to several points along the coastline. If the percentage increases weith each advisory, listen carefully to your local radio and television sta tions for emergency instructions. Ready your household and be prepared to evacuate if advised to do so. Hurricanes can cause exten sive flooding? not just along coastline, but far inland as well. Flood insurance is valuable fi nancial protection for your prop erty. You should be aware, how ever, that homeowners policies rarely cover damage from flood ing. Check into the availability of flood insurance to protect your property contacting your insur ance agent or broker.
