Combine fruit in your batter, for a delightful breakfast treat. Herbed scones are delicious with the evening meal. Serve both with lots of whipped butter. Single parents face stress Raising children in today's single parent and working mother-father en vironments creates increased chal lenges and parental stress, says Leonora J. Mack?y. Many parents recognize the need to receive as much help as they can get to make the task an easier one. Offering practical alternatives, Mackey, who is the Currituck County director for correlation of youth serv ices, will teach "Parenting" this fall at College of The Albemarle. The 20 hour, continuing education course will begin on Monday, Sept. 8 in Room A-201 on the main campus. The intent of the course, said Mackey, is to help parents to better communicate with their offspring in a way that leads to the resolution of conflicts through the use of logical consequence to modify negative be havior of the child. "Establishing a strong relationship, with few con flicts, is mainly a matter of learning to really listen to what your child is saying," the teacher explained, "and presenting choices that the child can then understand and accept . " The two-hour classes will mee{ each Monday through Nov. 10. Regis tration will be held during the first two class meetings. A $15 registration fee is required. Time deposits A CD (certificate of deposit) is a time deposit that cannot be with drawn without penalty before a spec ified date. I Correct frame A picture frame should be compati ble with the style and proportion of the art work. Frames, mats and in ner frames should never be of equal width. Metal frames Chrome and metal frames look best in formal, modern settings; rough wood or barn board frames fit well in informal rooms. Dr. A.F. Downum OPTOMETRIST STRAIGHTENING CROOKED EYES In a child whose eyes are normally aligned, both eyes focus on an object at the same time. When the brain receives the image, it is the result of what is seen by both eyes fused into a single image. This is known as binocular single vision. But when one eye is out of line, the child will see two objects. One image will show the object in its proper position. The misa ligned eye will show the object displaced or off center, a phenome non known as double vision. A child who experiences double vision will compensate for it by ignoring the image received by the misa ligned eye. He suppresses the disturbing second image. The misa ligned eye then becomes a "lazy eye," referred to medically as amblyopia. Sometimes the misaligned eye can be straightened by wearing corrective glasses alone or in combination with drops and exercises. The success of any treatment depends on how soon it begins. Dr. A.F.
