Lice problem Increasing RALEIGH? North Carolina tealth officials say the problem if head lice among children has Ijeen increasing in recent years, and it grows worse when school is in session. Dr. J.N. MacCormack, Chief of the Epidemiology Section for the N.C. Department of Human Re sources' Division of Health Serv ices, explained that lice, some times called "cooties," are small, biting insects that cause an itching skin condition caled pediculoses. "While there are several kinds of lice, we hear more about head liee at this time of year because of outbreaks in schools, partic ularly in the lower grades," Mac Cormack emphasized. "I'd like to stress that the problem is not the fault of the schools. It occurs when people live and work clo sely together and share personal items such as combs, hair brushes, coats, hats, or scarves. Children are more likely to do that sort of thing. He pointed out that anyone can have pediculoses, but the condi tion is less common among blacks, possible because of their hair type. Itching is the most common sign. MacCormack said that looking for head lice is fairly easy. The lice eggs, called "nits," stick to the strands of hair above the ears and on the back of the neck. Re moving the nits, however, is diffi cult. "If you or any member of your family have head lice, call your doctor or local health depart ment," he urged. "They will pre scribe a special shampoo to use. Be sure to follow their directions on both treatment and retreat ment." All of the person's clothing, bedding, linen, and peronal items, such as combs, should be washed well in hot, soapy water or dry cleaned, according to MacCormack. The hair of each person in the home should also be checked daily for two weeks to be sure more lice have not hatched. A child with head lice should be kept out of school until it is treated, but may return after treatment is completed. "The best way to prevent head lice, particularly among young children, is for parents to teach them not to share personal items such as combs, hair brushes, coats, hats, and scarves with other people," MacCormack con cluded. "Don't even share these items with family members or close friends." Workshop schedule So, you've been appointed chairman of1 the company's most pretigious committee? Congratu lations!
