There is one group of students at Perquimans High School who we would like to feature this week, the Marching Pirates. The band is 80 students strong this year, including 25 new mem bers. The band works extremely" hard, they began practicing this year before school started, and throughout football season they will be practicing. The band not only works during football sea son but throughout the year. Football season is only the begin ning. The band practices an hour during the school day plus they are practicing on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 5:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. on the field. When they practice on the field they work on everything from their music to marching in place. Most of the students began with the band program when they were in the sixth grade at Union School, and the band has almost become a way of life for them. tin 4i.. 11 ? A vviitTi we rccciiuy utineu wiui some of the band members and asked them what they would like to tell folks about the band they said they wanted everyone to know how hard they work, and they said they wanted the com munity's support. Mr. Ziemba seems to have three favorite words as the band rehearses their shows, 'Do it . again,' he says as he paces back and forth watching intently. But he is quick to complement the band for a job well done. The band has a great deal of respect for their band director of nine years, and more importantly they seem to be having a good time. This year the band is perform ing a chorus type of show during the half-time which lasts approx imately 10 minutes. Currently the show features three songs: 'Matador', a spanish style song, 'Trade-off' a drum solo, and 'Georgia' an old time favorite recognized by everyone. Later this fall the band will preform a song written specially for them by Larry Kerchner of the Tonight show. The song is called 'Love at second sight', and the band will perform their new song at a home game for everyones enjoy ment. The marching Pirates are a very polished group of muscians and performers. They have com peted in many band day competi tions, and hope to compete in sev eral this year. Their most recent competition was held in Churchland, Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 20th. The band did very well according to Mr. Ziemba. The band performed in the 2A class and received 3rd place overall, 2nd place for the drumline, and 2nd place for the rifles. Later this year the band plans to travel to competionst in Bertie county, the annual Peanut Festival in Edenton, and possibly the band day held in Carv. N.C. Last year the band received and accepted an invitation to per form at Epcott Center in Or lando, Florida. The group was gone for five days, and proved to be a trip they will not soon forget. The trip cost approximately $14,000 dollars, and the baijd members as well as parents .and boosters raised the money through fruit sales, newspaper subscription sales, donations from area merchants, and through sales of their community calendars. '? At the present time this year the band doesn't have a big trip planned, but you never know what might come up. The band is currently working on their cat endar sales, and they will be available soon from band mem bers. t! The students in the band are not the only ones working hard. The band is supported by a group of people known as the band boosters who are hard at work behind the scenes. The band boosters work with band mem bers on fund raisers and other projects which support the group in many ways from moving in struments on the sidelines at the football games to insuring that the band has all the things thfey need. The band is a special group of young people. So the next time you are at the ballgame pay close attention to the group on the move, the Marching Pirate Band of Perquimans High School. This young man really worked up a sweat while giving a perfor mance
