College of the Albemarle offers programs for residents ELIBABETH CITY-Albemarle area residents will have their first opportunity to hear 1966-87 College of The Albemarle visiting artist Leslie Moye perform this Sunday afternoon. The talented cellist will make his public debut at four o'clock at the First United Methodist Church on South Road Street. Moye's association with COA is his first experience as a member of the Visiting Artist Program established by the North Carolina Arts Council and the Department of Community Colleges. The Columbus, Georgia na tive has performed as principal cel list with a number of symphony or chestras. The artist says his real strength lies in chamber music. He gained ex perience with Meadows Trio in Dal las, Texas, and as a member of Mon tana's only chamber ensemble, the Cascade Quartet. The Southern Methodist University graduate will be accompanied by pia nist Lily Chou. Hie afternoon program will fea ture selected works by Bach, Beetho ven, and Schumann. Compositions in clude: Suite Number 2 in D minor for violoncello solo; Fantasy Pieces, Opus 73 for cello and piano; and So nata Number 3 in A major, Opus M for cello and piano. The public is invited to attend the recital. There is no admission charge for the community event. ELIZABETH CITY-Water fowl, raccoons, owls, gamefish, and shorebirds are among the many "living" subjects depcited by artist , Maude "Micky" Har I ding Blakely in her current ex hibit at College of TEe Albe marle. ?? The Nags Head aatist has made her work more unique by using driftwood rather than can vas for her painting. More than 20 years ago, the Washington, N.C. native began collecting the weathered, salt-bleached pieces that washed ashore along the Dare beaches. Blakely is a long-time contrib utor to the Outer Banks Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. In 1979, she was the featured artist at the DU banquet in Martinsville, Vir ginia. Her love for animals is appar ent in her work. Two raccoons on wood were chosen as examples for oil painting teclpiiques in a Barclay Sheaks book on the sub ject of oils. Other Blakely paint ing, both on wood and canvas, are exhibited at Lance's in Nags Head and at J.K.'s in Kill Devil Hills. The public is invited to view her exhibition at the college from 8 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. each Mon day through Thurday, and from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Fridays for the remainder of the month. It is located in the A Building lobby. Two informational programs ex plaining state requirements that must be met by employers whose businesses use hazardous materials will be held at College of The Alber marie on Nov. 3 and 4. The sessions, sponsored by the COA Small Business Center and the N.C. Department of Labor, will fea ture a department representative who will discuss the provisions of the OS HA Hazard Communication Stan dard and the North Carolina Hazard ous Chemicals Right-to- Know Act. The first of the coat-free meetings will be held from nine until 11 o'clock, on Tuesday, Nov. 4 in the same loca tion. The OS HA Hazardd Communica tion Standard is designed to make in formation about hazardous chemi cals available to employees through training programs and data sheets, according to labor department spokesman Mercer Doty. The stan dard became effective for manufac turers and local government last May. By May 25, 1987, most businesses involved in agriculture, transporta tion, wholesale and retail track- fi nance, construction, public utilities, insurance, real estate, and services, also must comply with provisions of the standard. 1 The N.C. Hazardous Chemicals Right-to-Know Act provides infoi (na tion about hazardous chemicals in businesses and government agencies for firefighters and private citizens. Most employers in the state have been subject to the requirements of the act since May 25 of this year Materials to help employers com ply with requirements will be distrib uted during the two meetings at ihe college. Hypertension in children can be caused by other diseases such as heart and kidney diseases. Called secondary hypertension, this will re turn to normal if the other disease is successfully treated. Certain medicines can cause high blood pressure. Also, a small number of children have primary hyperten sion, the causes of which are un-" known . During childhood blood pressure" usually increases as the body in creases in size. Also because of growth and development in children, their blood pressure varies to a Women appointed to council RALEIGH? Many questions about hyperten sion in children remain unanswered, but certain tendencies exist. Over weight children usually have higher blood pressure than those who are not. Also children may inherit the tendency from one or both parents who have hypertension. Black Amer icans more frequently than whites have high blood pressure. Scientists believe that most chil dren with modest increases in blood pressure will not develop primary hypertension as adults. Those at risk of continuing to have high blood pres sure as adults are children who re peatedly have above normal blood pressure and who remain overweight and who come from families with a history of high blood pressure. Parents can help their child if hy pertension is discovered. If the child needs to lose weight, parents can pro vide support.
