Downum OPTOMETRIST OXYGEN AND THE EYE % In a sense, contact lenses are a foreign body stuck on th? eye. If you've ever suffered from having o mote of dust or on oyolash stuck in the corner of the eye, you'll know it con b* extremely irritating. Yet this doesn't happen with the modern contact lonsas. Why? The main reason for this is that contact lenses float on a layer of teors that covers the cornea and do not make direct contoct with the eyeball. In addition, contact lenses are made and fittad so that they are able to move slightly with each blink. This allows tha eye to constantly trade new tears for old, alternately forcing carbon dioxide-rich tears out from under the lens and allowing mora fresh, oxygen-rich tears underneath. The amount of oxygen that reaches the eye is of primary Impor tance for the comfort and health of your eye. In this regard, con tact lens design has made enormous strides. Gas-parmaabl* lenses allow oxygen to pass directly THROUGH the Ions and to cornea. Dr. A.F. DOWNUM 103 W. Eden St. Edenton, N.C. Phone: 482-8444 1 1 . .
