Local News Area Obituaries ROBERT H. CHAPPELL ' HOBBSVILLE? Robert HoUowell Chappell, 43, of Route 1, Box 2W-A, died Jan. i, 1987 at 12:10 p.m. in his home. Graveside services were con ducted Saturday, Jan. 3rd, at 2 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, by the Rev. Gene Asbill. Twiford's Memorial Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Chappell was a native of Suf folk, Va. He was a budget officer with the N.C. Department of Commerce in Raleigh. Chappell was a member of Warwick Baptist Church. Survivors include his parents, Ed ward John and Mrs. Syble HoUowell Chappell both of the home; a sister, Mrs. Sheryl C. Allen of Atlanta, Ga.; and a brother, Johnny Chappell of Hobbsville. BERNAL D. WEBB BELVIDERE? Bernal Dorman Webb, 46, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 1967, in Camden County. A native of St. Louis, Mo. he was the sqn of Mrs. Ruth Barr Webb of Elizabeth city and the late Dorman E. Webb. He was a clerk for a conve nience store and formerly worked as an Electronics Technician with Nor folk Naval Shipyard. He was a Catho lic, a member of American Legion Poet 126 and the Disabled American Veterans. He was a Navy Veteran. Survivors include his wife, Judith Stallings Webb; a daughter. Miss Lisa Webb of Route 1, Belvidere; a son, Ricky Webb of Route 1, Belvi dere ; and a brother, Francis Webb of Los Angeles, Cal. Graveside services were held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Stallings Family Cemetery, Whiteston, with full military honors. Swindell Fune ral Home, Hertford, was in charge of arrangements. FLORA B. SINGLETARY WHITE VILLE? Mrs. Flora Bul lock Singletary, 65, of Whiteville, died Thursday, January 1, 1987. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. in the McKenzie Mortu ary Chapel, Whiteville. Burial fol lowed in Whiteville Memorial Ceme tery. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Patricia Sweeney of Elizabeth City and Mrs. Gail Russell of Over land Park, Kan.; two sons, James D. Singletary of Hertford and Gregory H. Singletary of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Wilson of Gastonia; three brothers, A.R. Bul lock of Fairmont, Malcolm Bullock of Salisbury and James Bullock of Ro chester, N.Y.; and 8 grandchildren. Information was provided as a courtesy of Swindell Funeral Home. MURRAY D. LANE HERTFORD? Murray Dudley Lane, 88, of Route 2, Box 87, Hert ford, died Monday, December 29, 1966, in his home. A native of Chowan County he was the son of the late Hosea and Eliza beth Jane Layden Lane and the hus band of Mrs. Virginia Spangler Lane. He was a retired truck farmer and a member of Chappell Hill Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon for 48 years and was a long-time Church Treasurer and Sunday School teacher. Besides his wife survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Garland (Glenda) Walker of Newport News, Va.; two sons, Donald Lane and Leon Lane, both of Chesapeake, Va. ; 8 grandchil dren and 18 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31, at 3:00 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Knowles offi Course set An introductory course in amateur radio will be held in Elizabeth City January 15, 1967. Sponsored by the Elizabeth City Parks and Recreation Department and the Pasquotank Am ateur Radio Club, the course sessions are scheduled for each Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Knobbs Creek Recreation Center. Lesson topics will include materi als regarding radio and electronic theory, government regulations and Morse Code. Experienced ham radio operators will serve as instructors. No course fees will be charged. James (Jimmy) Allen Stallings, 52, of 1322 Malmgren Court, Norfolk, Va., died Monday morning, December 29, 1986, from in juries received in a hunting accident near Whites ton. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of Mrs Buna Winslow Stallings of Route 1, Belvidere and the late Louis R. Stallings. He was the retired co-owner of American Self-Storage Co., the former co owner of Equipment Rentals, Inc. and formerly worked at the Naval Supply Center. Mr. Stallings was a member of Bethany United Method ist Church and attended Trinity Bap tist Church in Norfolk. He was a member of the Turnpike Hunt Club and a former member of the National Guard. Survivors include his mother; his wife, Mrs. Alma W. Stallings; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Donna) Rood and Mrs. William (Cathy) Sklar, both of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. William (Geraldine) Driver of Wilmington, Del. and Mrs. Judith S. Webb of Route 1, Belvidere; three brothers, Clyde E. Stallings of Vir ginia Beach, Louis Richard Stallings, and Donald Ray Stallings, both of Route 1, Belvidere; and a grand child, Miss Amy C. Rood of Norfolk. Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 31, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bethany United Method Church with the Rec. James T. Wilkes and the Rev. Bobby Jordan officiating. Burial followed in the Jack S tailings Cemetery with Swin dell Funeral Home in charge. Pallbearers were Douglas Alexan der, Jimmy Baker, Robert Mann, Larry Hemenway, Steve E. Stallings and Gary S. Disharoon. WILLIAM CARTWRIGHT. JR. HERTFORD? William Henry "Bill" Cartwright, Jr., 88, of Route 4, died Jan. 3, 1966 at 7:20 p.m. in Cho v an Hospital. The funeral was conducted Tues day at 2 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Bill Hunley, pas tor of Evangelical Methodist Church. Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery. Twiford's Memorial Chapel Chapel, Elizabeth City, was in charge of ar rangements. Mr. Cartwright was a native of Perquimans County and a retired farmer. He was a member of Wood land United Methodist Church. Cartwright was the son of the late William Henry and Elizabeth Harrell Cartwright, Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Joanne Cavedo of Maryland; a son, D. Luckie Cartwright of Elizabeth City; three sisters, Mrs. Harry (Lela Mae) Winslow of Hertford, Mrs. Len nart (Blanche) Olson of Dallas, Texas and Mrs. Eddie (Maude) Hay den of Forest Hill, Calif. ; a brother, Davis Odell Cartwright of Hertford; and three grandchildren. JULIES F. HARRIS Jules Fleetwood Harris, 72, of Route 2, Box 106, died Jan. 2 at Albe marle Hospital. The funeral was conducted at Twi ford's Memorial Chapel Sunday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Keith Nanney. Burial was at New Hollywood Ceme tery. Mr. Harris was a retired, self-em ployed carpenter and a native of Pas quotank County. He was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Elsie Jones Harris and was son of the late Miles Sharber Harris and Rebecca McNider Harris Russell. Survivors other than his wife in clude two daughters, Yvonne Adams of Springfield, Va., and Marie Harris Myers of Elizabeth City; three sons, Miles Lee Harris, Gary Harris and Randy Harris, all of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Mildred Benton and Laura Janskey, both of Elizabeth City; a brother, Paige Harris of Hert ford; 10 grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. WALTER M. WILLIAMS, SR. Walter Marvin Williams, Sr., 81, of 901 Baxter Street died Jan. 2, 1987 at 2; 10 p.m. at Riverside Hospital, New port News, Va. The funeral was conducted Sunday at 4 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Cha pel by the Rev. Charles McKenzie. Burial was in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. A native of Perquimans County. Mr. Williams had lived in Elizabeth City for the past 43 years. He was re tired from carpentry and construc tion and was a member of the City Road United Methodist Church and the men's Bible class. He was a member of the Carpenters Local No. 331. Williams was the husband of Lillie Smith Williams and son of the late Alphonso Williams and Margaret Ward Williams Matthews. Other survivors include three daughters, Margaret Trueblood of Newport News, Va., Kay Lane of Hampton, Va., and Josephine Dale of Elizabeth City; two sons, Douglas H. Williams of Elizabeth City and Wal ter Marvin Williams, Jr. of Long Beach, Miss.; two sisters, Hazel White of Hertford and Janie Stanton of Winfall; three brothers, Alphonso Williams, Jr. of Belvidere; Floyd Matthews and Charlie Matthews, both of Hertford; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
