NORMAN S. GODFREY. SR.
HERTFORD? Norman Spencer
Godfrey, Sr., 64, of Route 4, Box 878,
Hertford, died Saturday evening,
' (January 17, 1987 in Norfolk General
Hospital.
A native of Perquimans County he
Vtts the son of the late John Thomas,
Sr. and Mary Russell Godfrey. He
was a self-employed building con
tractor, a member of the New Hope
United Methodist Church, the Du
rants Neck Ruritan Club and an hon
orary member of the Durants Neck
Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife, Helen
Quidley Godfrey; three sons, Nor
man S. Godfrey, Jr. and Wayne Godf
rey, both of Elizabeth City and Fran
kie Godfrey of Rt. 4, Hertford; two
sisters, Mrs. Aby Nixon of Route 3,
Edenton and Mrs. Sophia Shaffer of
LaPlata, Md , seven brothers, J.T.
Godfrey, Jr., James Godfrey, Calvin
Godfrey and Ray Godfrey, all of Rt.
3, Hertford, Hazel Godfrey of Vir
ginia Beach, Va., George Godfrey of
San Francisco, Cal. and Braxton
Godfrey of Tucson, Ariz.; and 2
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tues
day at 3:00 p.m. in the New Hope
United Methodist Church with the
Rev. Larry Higgins officiating.
Burial followed in the Godfrey Fam
ily Cemetery near the home with
Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, in
charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were William Ownley,
Calvin Banks, Linford Stallings, Ken
neth Winslow, Donald Waters, Mar
ion Godfrey, Val Bridges and Wil
liam Ray Chappell.
ELTON D. TAYLOR, SR.
GATES? Elton Davis Taylor, Sr.,
69, of Route 2, Gates, died Thursday,
January 15, 1987, in a Suffolk, Va.
hospital.
Funeral services were held Satur
day at 2:00 p.m. in Savage's United
Methodist Church by the Rev. Mary
Von Cannon and Haywood Martin.
Burial was in the church cemetery
with Harrell's Funeral Home, Gates
ville, in charge.
A native of Gates Mr. Taylor had
retired from the Naval Air Facility in
Norfolk. He was a Navy veteran and
a member of Savage's United Meth
odist Church and the Drum Hill Hunt
Club.
Survivors include his wife, Sadie
King Taylor; three daughters, Carole
Sawyer of Portsmouth, Va., Susan
Cutler of Gates and Cindy Jefferson
of Chesapeake, Va.; two sons, Elton
Taylor, Jr. of Suffolk and Ronald
Taylor of Hobbsville; two sisters,
Nellie Lassiter of Sunbury and Mar
garet Hofler of Gatesville; six broth
ers, Linwood Taylor and Edgar, both
of Tyner, Stanley Taylor of New
York, N.Y., George Taylor of Pal
atka, Fla., Robert Taylor of Hertford
and Lloyd Taylor of Portsmouth,
Va.; 8 grandchildren and a great
grandchild.

Mr. Pulley was a native and life
long resident of Norfolk, Va. and just
recently moved to Hertford. He re
tired from the Public Works Center,
Norfolk, as a civil service worker af
,ter 20 years of service. He was a

ist Church and sang in the church

BELVIDERE? Miss Olive Eliza
beth Layden, formerly of Route 1,
Belvidere, died Sunday, January 18,
1987, in Chowan Hospital.
A native of Perquimans County she
was the daughter of the late John W.
and Sarah Elizabeth Winslow Lay
den. She was a member of the White
ville Grove Baptist Church and its
Women's Missionary Society.
Survivors include nieces and neph
ews.
Funeral services were held Tues
day at 11:00 a.m. in the Swindell Fu
neral Chapel with the Rev. William
Byrum and the Rev. Joe Moorefield
officiating. Burial follow in UpRiver
Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Claude Winslow,
Elton Layden, Wesley Layden,
James 0. Layden, Jr., Charles Lay
den and Thurman Riddick.

Coast Fireman Brian L. Godbey, a
1986 graduate of North Pitt High
School of Bethel, NC, was graduated
from Machinery Technician School
During the 16-week course the
Coast Guard Reserve Training Cen
ter Yorktown, Va. Godbey received
instruction on the inspection, servic
ing and repair of gasoline, turbine
and diesel engines, hydraulic sys
tems, auxiliary machinery, and re
frigeration and air-conditioning
equipment. His other studies include
blueprint welding techniques and
job-related safety procedures.
ECU announces honor roll
GREENVILLE? Students earning
academic honors at East Carolia
University during the fall represent
91 of the state's counties, 29 states
and the District of Columbia, and 13
foreign countries.
A total of 2,763 ECU students
earned places on the university's offi
cial honors list for the semester.
Most elite of the honors is all A's.
