Local News Farm costs and returns survey to be conducted with farmers nationwide A nationwide survey titled "Farm Costs and Returns," la being con ducted in February and March by USD As National Agricultural Statis tics Service to determine agricultu ral production expenses and the fi nancial situation of farm operators. The North Carolina Crop and Live stock Reporting Service will be per sonally interviewing close to 000 farm operators selected for this sur vey out of a nationwide sample of 124,800 It is therefore imperative that all farm operators selected re spond to this important survey. The primary purposes of the sur vey are: 1. To provide date on the financial situation of farm operators. 2. To obtain agricultural production expenses for U.S. farms S. To determine the relative impor tance of various production expense items and group of items. 4. To determine the relative impor tance of various production expense items and group of items. 5. To help determine farmer's net cash income and net farm income levels for 1986. The information collected in this survey will reflect production and buying trends of U.S. farmers and ranchers. Estimates of farm costs and production expenses are used to compute net farm income, which is needed to better understand changes in the economic position of farmers. The financial data will provide a current, more detailed perspective of the debts, assets, cash flow, and level of financial stress of farmers throughout agriculture. Estimates of farm costs, income, and financial data are used to both help the public better understand agriculture and to provide the Department of Agricul ture and Land Grant Colleges and Universities the data needed to con duct farm management and agricul tural finance research and extension programs. The data are also used by agribusi ness, Congress, and the Department as decisions are made that affect ag riculture. These data are vital in both the public and private sectors for evaluation of the current farm coat, income, and financial situation of farmers and in planning for the fu ture. The National Agricultural Statis tics Service will publish farm produc tion expenditure data for the nation and ten economic regions of the U.S. in June 1967 The publication is avail able free to survey respondents.
