Farm costs and returns survey to be conducted with farmers nationwide
A nationwide survey titled "Farm
Costs and Returns," la being con
ducted in February and March by
USD As National Agricultural Statis
tics Service to determine agricultu
ral production expenses and the fi
nancial situation of farm operators.
The North Carolina Crop and Live
stock Reporting Service will be per
sonally interviewing close to 000
farm operators selected for this sur
vey out of a nationwide sample of
124,800 It is therefore imperative
that all farm operators selected re
spond to this important survey.
The primary purposes of the sur
vey are:
1. To provide date on the financial
situation of farm operators.
2. To obtain agricultural production
expenses for U.S. farms
S. To determine the relative impor
tance of various production expense
items and group of items.
4. To determine the relative impor
tance of various production expense
items and group of items.
5. To help determine farmer's net
cash income and net farm income
levels for 1986.
The information collected in this
survey will reflect production and
buying trends of U.S. farmers and
ranchers. Estimates of farm costs
and production expenses are used to
compute net farm income, which is
needed to better understand changes
in the economic position of farmers.
The financial data will provide a
current, more detailed perspective of
the debts, assets, cash flow, and level
of financial stress of farmers
throughout agriculture. Estimates of
farm costs, income, and financial
data are used to both help the public
better understand agriculture and to
provide the Department of Agricul
ture and Land Grant Colleges and
Universities the data needed to con
duct farm management and agricul
tural finance research and extension
programs.
The data are also used by agribusi
ness, Congress, and the Department
as decisions are made that affect ag
riculture. These data are vital in both
the public and private sectors for
evaluation of the current farm coat,
income, and financial situation of
farmers and in planning for the fu
ture.
The National Agricultural Statis
tics Service will publish farm produc
tion expenditure data for the nation
and ten economic regions of the U.S.
in June 1967 The publication is avail
able free to survey respondents.
