National library week to be observed in schools In observance of National Library Week, April 6-11, the school libraries in Perquimans County are all plan ning special activities. Governor James G. Martin has proclaimed Wednesday, April 8, 1987, as "School Library Media Day" and encourages the citizens of North Carolina to be come aware of the contributions of school library media programs in our schools. The theme for the North Carolina Asspciation of School Librarians' cel ebration of School Librarians' Media Day is "Take Time to Read? Use Your School Library Media Center." Media personnel in all public schools in North Carolina are planning a spe cial "Read-In" at two o'clock the af ternoon of April 8. At this time all stu dents, teachers, administrators, and other school employees will pause to enjoy reading. In addition to the "Read-In" on Wednesday, our school libraries will have other activities during the sch{>ol week. At Central School, Mrs. Diane Sivills, librarian, has planned a comic strip contest, a book mark contest, and a puppet show to be given to the kindergarten by the fourth graders. At Hertford Grammar School, the librarian, Mrs. Eudora Harvey, has planned the following special activ ities for the week: story hour, door decorations for all classrooms, book mark contest, computer skills dem onstration for adults, Indian arrow heads demonstration and media dis play. During National Library Week, the Perquimans Union School library will observe fine-free days. Students will have the opportunity to turn in all overdue books without the penalty of fines. Additionally, Mrs. Darla Matthews, librarian, will conduct a reference contest with daily prizes. She will also show the film, "Bookstory," to the fifth and sixth graders who will make book jackets and book marks. Perquimans High School students will also have fine-free week during April 6-11. Mrs. Carroll Harrell, li brarian, and the library assistants have been invited to attend a presen tation of book reports given by the Honors Program students at Eliza beth City State University on Tues day, April 7. The high school library will conduct a different slide pro gram for students and teachers each day to demonstrate how the media center supports each area of the cur riculum with resource materials. The library assistants are conducting a survey of "the favorite book" of members of our community and school. Look for results of this survey in next week's edition of the Peiquimans Weekly. College reading lists will be available for the high school students and on special display with the books on these lists. Mario Frierson is a third grader in Mrs. Owens class at Per quimans Central School. He enjoys all kinds of art and espe cially enjoys drawing. Mario likes to draw animals and trucks. Mario says he watched his brother George and then he wanted to learn how to draw. Mario says art is lots of fun and he plans on being an artist one day. He says you just can't have to much art. Carisa Harrell and Vitita White, fourth graders in Mrs. Fer rell's class at Hertford Grammar School really enjoyed their lesson on drawing portraits. Both girls look forward to the days they have art and enjoy using different materials, looking at art and Just having fun. Two years have passed since that unforgettable day, when your life was tragically taken away. We share manyv fond memories and treasure each one.
