Local News Information on growing hummingbird plants Nature lovers and gardeners feed birds in their yards to assure that birds who stay through the winter have sufficient food to stay alive, to control biological pests and, simply to watch the birds. Mid-April is an important time for those who feed wild birds, especially with the return of the ruby-throated hummingbird to the Piedmont. Many people have special hummingbird feeders and are able to watch these birds in their acrobatic formations. A divebombing attack resulting from the birds' incredible speed and buzz like humming can be heard at the feeder when several birds fly in si multaneously. Hummingbirds beat their wings 50 times a second, seldom pervh on any thing, do not walk on the ground and even bathe on the wing. To provide the energy for all this activity, the hummingbird must have half its body weight in sugars every day. This comes from 50-60 trips to a sugar source. Flower nectar, which contains sugar, is a quick source of this en ergy. A hummingbird also eats spi ders in their webs and insects found around the flowers. A mother hum mingbird will seek insects in the nec tar, which she regurgitates into the mouth of her young who need the in sect protein for growth. Many flowering plants are con structed so that the hummingbird is the only pollinator. The nectaries in these flowers are at the base of a Ion tube that only hummingbirds' tong ues can reach. While some long-tong ued bees and butterflies exist, they need a landing place because they cannot eat on the wing as humming birds do. A hummingbird does not use its tongue like a straw to suck the nec tar. Instead, the edges of the tongue roll inward to form a parallel through to hold the nectar. The bird's tongue is retracted into its mouth and the nectar then is swallowed. Since hummingbirds must refuel about every 10 minutes, they are no ticeable in beds of hummingbird flowers. The birds are attracted to brighty pink, orange and red flowers. Such wild flowers as bee blam and cardinal flower attract humming birds. But some vines, shrubs, herbs and some trees have flower struc tures that appeal to hummingbirds. For a list of hummingbird plants, sent a stamped, self -addressed enve lope to the N.C. Accordig to the National Schol arship Matching Sevice (NSMS) mil lions of dollars in student financial aid is available through private sources such as civic groups, profes sional organizations, churches and industry. And unlike lthe govern ment, with private sources income is rarely a limiting factor. ; . NSMS, is a national research orga nizatio, syas many of these private sources of. financial aid go unused each school year because parents and students simply do not know where to apply! The objective of the company is to help college bound stu dents find suitable sources of schol arships, grants and loans. Through years of research the company has compiled a comprehensive financial aid databank which it says would re quire months of time and effort to du plicate financial aid sources that their computerized service can pro vide in a matter of days. The system is effective because the student provides background data in cludig interests and career goals. NSMS enters this information into their computer syustem which must automatically find at least five sources of applicable financial aid based on the student's application. If five sources of aid are not found, the company guarantees to return the $39 application processing fee, along with all sources they did find free of charge. The company also has a separate financial aid data bank for students who have graduated from college and waht to further their profesional careers by attending Graduate School. For a free application and more in formation call NSMS at their toll free number: 1-800-USA-1221, Extension 7067. N.C.
