School news Hertford Grammar School news All students and faculty of Hertford Grammar School enjoyed "Media Day," Wednesday, April 8, 1987. Younger students visited the library for a "story hour, presented by Anne Weatherington and Joyce Felton, while 4, 5, and 6th graders enjoyed informative presentations by Dr. Da vid McCall and a representative froui the Museum of the Albemarle. Mr. McCall, the caretaker of the Newbold- White House presented both videos and artifacts about the Algon kian Indians and the Newbold-White House as they are related to the his tory of Perquimans County. All tea chers were "entertained" in the newly equipped computer room. The staff had an opportunity to preview and experiment with instructional computer materials presented by Mr. Locus from Elizabeth City State University. Each classroom door was deco rated to represnt the cover of a book and students also enjoyed creating book marks. The doors were judged by Mrs. Estelle Felton and Mrs. Jua nita Bailey. A "Read In" was held (or a 30 minute period in all classes. Our thanks to community volunteers and to Librarian, Mrs. Eudora Harvey for an enjoyable day. The fourth grade students of Mrs. Karen Luszcz's class presented a two act play entitled "The Arrival of Pad dington" to the entire student body on April 8-9. Student actors and ac tresses were as follows: Paddingdon, Jonathan Nixon; Mr. Brown, Calvin Johnson; Mrs. Brown, Anne Long; Judy Brown, Denise Perry, Jodie Brown, Shannon Long; Refreshment Man, Johnnie Dunbar. Mrs. Luszcz's class will also take a field trip to Raleigh today, Thursday, April 1Mb to visit points of interest in the capital city. The trip is in connec tion with the study of N.C. history. Most improved students for the six weeks period are Calvin Johnson and Roy Brothers. The boys both will win personal pan pizzas at the Pizza Hut in Eden ton. Students in the 5th grade class of Mrs. Edna Wolvertoo are completing a unit on letter writing. The students have written personal letters to friends and family as well as business to Arms concerning ca reer opportunities. As a culmination for the unit and in connection with a program sponsored through the United Nations, students are writing personal letters to Russian students. The class is anxiously awaiting a re sponse. Pictured left are winners of the drug abuse poster contest from Mrs. Modlin's room at Central School. Also pictured are J. J. Jackson of Wendy's, and Molly Williams of WCNC who served as judges. Winners of the contest were: 1st place: Jami Powers, 2nd place: Crissy Homa, and 3rd place: Nina Arneson. Win ners were presented with $15.00, $10.00, and $5.00 in cou pons respectively. Mr. Jack son also gave each student in the class a coupon for a ham burger, french fries and a coke. Below are bookmarkers which were made by the class in observance of media day. Pictured right and below are homework machines as de signed by Tangle Warren and Tiffany Cerveny of Mrs. Pas ternak's class at Hertford Grammar School. Both girls are sixth graders. Parents may reg ister their child between 9:00 and 3:00. To be eligible for kindergarten fo the 1987-88 school year, a child mutt be five years old by October 15. A birth certificate is required for reg istration. Ferrell attends seminar CULLOWEE-Karen C. Ferrell of Hertford, a fourth-grade teacher at Hertford Grammar School, recently , participated in a seminar at the North Carolina Center for the Ad vancement of Teaching at Western Carolina University. Ferrell attended a seminar held March 18-22 titled, "Machine in the Garden: Computers and the Human Spirit," coordinated by Dr. A.G. Rud, Jr., a Center Fellow. Seminar lead ers were Paul A. Wagner, Jr., direc tor of the University of Houston at Clear Lake; an Mary D. Welch, an associate of the Institute for Logic and Cognitive Studies. Ferrell received a bachelor's de gree from East Carolina University. The N.C.
