Forty teachers and forty students from across the state were selected to attend the seminar on April 11th. The seminar offered both the stu dents and teachers a unique opportu nity to meet one of America's most distinguished artist, Mr. Jacob Law rence. Mr. Lawrence is known for his many activities including his teach ing at the fabled Black Mountain School of North Carolina in 1946 with Bauhaus master Josef Albers, his fa mous portrait which appeared on the cover of Time Magazine in 1970, and his many exhibitions which have been held at museums such as the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, and the Seattle Art Museum. During the course of the seminar students and teachers were given the opportunity to meet with Mr. Law rence, tour the 20th century galleries, and students had a discussion on "Art after High School'" with Profes sor Jim Starrett of the N.C.S.U. State health officials are urging all Ncrth Carolinians, es pecially those over age 50. to make >ure they ore properly immunized against tetanus and diphtheria. According to Dr. J.N. MacCor mack, chie! of the Epidemiology Sec tion for the Department of Human Resources' Division of Health Serv ices. the chance of getting tetanus, ;also known as lockjaw, is greatest ?tluring spring and summer. I;. "The tetanus germ is found in soil .an dust." MacCormack said. "With -more people enjoying the outdoors "during warmer weather, especially with gardening and lawn work, the chance of the tetanus germ entering jhe body is greater. Once the germ Renters the body, it creates a toxin ?which causes the muscles to go into ^spasms and then lock unless the per son has been properly immunized." - He pointed out that most people think that tetanus resluts from con tact with rusty nails. However, it an enter the body through a minor cut, puncture wound or burn caused by anything ranging from a cat's scratch to a thorn prick. The last two cases of tetanus re ported in North Carolina occurred in 1985, a decrease from 1983 when there were five tetanus victims. MacCormack said that health offi cials are concerned about the age of tetanus victims. "In 1952. the average age of tet anus patients was 15 years old. Of the 11 cases reported since 1980, how ever, eight were 55 years or older," he explained. "This indicates that our older citizens are not keeping up with their tetanus shots. This is espe cially important because older peo ple and newborn infants are less likely to survive the disease." Tetanus immunization for adults includes an initial series of three shots followed by a booster shot ev ery 10 years. Tetanus and diphtheria vaccine are usually combined into one shot. Most children in North Car olina receive their tetanus and diph theria vaccination along with other basic immunizations before starting school; however, it is important that they get their boosters every 10 years, too. "The treatment for tetanus is lengthy and expensive, " MacCor i mack said "About all (hat can be done for a tetanus victim is to sedate the patient and simply wait out the disease. This could mean three to four weeks in a hospital, or possibly even longer " He added that '.he cost for a tetanus vacinnation is very small compared to actual treatment, which averages about $1-4. (KM) per case. i NOTICE There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, April 21st at the Perquimans Co.
