Leslie Mae Forehand pleaded
guilty of aggravated affray, appeal

Valerie Harrell Archer pleaded
guilty of aggravated affray. She re
ceived 6 months suspension, 2 years,
fl?0.00 and co6t of court, and is not to
assault either for one year, and is not
to go on premises of the Rainbow
Lounge for one year. An appeal was
noted.
' Gladys Fowler Graves was found
guilty of speeding 67-55. She received
, a $25 fine and costs of court.
Che Jimmi Sutton was found guilty
of Larceny. Edward Nathan Lassiter
was also found guilty of Larceny.
They received 6 months suspended 1
year, supervised probation, $200 fine
and costs to be paid under supervsion
of probation officer. They are to per
form 72 hours of community services
and pay fee as prescribed by law.
Cathy Bateman Harrell pleaded
guilty to driving 55-45 She received
prayer for judgement upon payment
of cost.
Toby Harvey pleaded guilty of
Worthless Checks on two counts. He
received SO days suspended 1 year,
$25 fine and cost of court for each
case to be paid before Friday, May i,
1987 by 5:00 p.m. He is not to issue a
worthless check for a period of 1
year, make restitution in the sum of
85.45 through CSC office.
John Elwood Nowell was charged
with assault on female. He was found
guilty to and received 2 years, $200
and cost of court. Bond remains the
same. An appeal was noted.
Wilbur Roy Cope land pleaded not
guilty to communicating threats. He
received 30 days suspended 1 year,
$50 and cost of court. He is not to go
on premises of Belvidere Cafe for 1
year.
James Banks pleaded not guilty to
abandonment and non-support. He
? received 90 days suspended 2 years.
He is to pay $300 monthly to officer of
CSC for Dorothy Banks.
Dorothy Lee Banks pleaded not
guilty to injury to personal property.
She was found guilty.
Dorothy Banks pleaded not guilty
to simple assault. She was found
guilty and received 90 days sus
pended 1 year, $50 and cost. $159 res
titution to be paid through Clerk Su
pervisor to be disbursed to James
Banks for damages.

HUYLA H. GRIFFIN
ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Huyla
Hughes Griffin, 89, of 909 W. Church
St., died May 1, 1987 after a long ill
ness.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs.
Betty Ingrain of Elizabeth City, a
son, William Edward Griffin of Hert
ford; seven grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Tuesday, May 5th at 11:00 a.m. in
New Hollywood Cemetery by the
Rev. Josh McKenzie. Twiford Memo
rial Chapel, Elizabeth City handled
the arrangements.
RUFUS A. HUDSON
HERTFORD? Rufus Alvin Hud
son, 35, of Route 2, Box 162, Hertford,
died Sunday morning. May 3, 1987, at
4:90 in Albemarle Hospital after a
sudden illness.
A native of Chowan bounty he was
a lifetime resident of Perquimans
County. He was the son of Mrs. Wi
nifred Swain Hudson of Hertford and
the late Arvin Washington Hudson
was a member of the Berea Church
of Christ and attended the Hertford
United Methodist Church, was a
member of the Winfall Volunteer
Fire department and a former mem
ber of the Perquimans County Jay
cees.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Sandra Smith Judson, two daugh
ters, Miss Wendy Hudson and Miss
Jamie Hudson, both of the home; his
;mother, a sister, Mrs. William Pres
?ton (Saundra) Nixon of Wilmington;
and a brother, W.A. "Billy" Hudson
of Lawrenceville, Va.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside in
Cedarwood Cemetery with the Rev.
Daniel LeRoy and the Rev. Henry
.Bizzell officiating. Swindell Funeral
;Home was in charge of arrange
ments.
1 Pallbearers were Frank Brown,
Ronnie Baker, Walter Jones, Tony
Bass, Wayne Winslow and Larry
Gibfae. Members of the Winfall Vol
unteer Fire Department served as
Honorary Pallbearers.

HERTFORD-James R. "Jim"
Davenport, 65, of 609 S. Church
(Street, Hertford died Friday evening,
May 1, 1967, in Norfolk General Hos
pital.
A native of Norfolk, he was the son
of the late James Alton and Mary
Brickhouse Davenport. He retired
from the Civil Service as a meat cut
ter. He was a member of the Hertford
Baptist Church and was a Navy vet
eran of World War II.
; Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Marjorie White Davenport; two
(laughters, Mrs. Bobby (Carolyn)
Hillard of Angier and Mrs. Henry
(Nancy) Wood of Coinjock; a son,
Marshall (Marty) Davenport of Win

71, of Route 2, Box 32-F, Hertford,
died Tuesday evening, April 28, 1967,

A native of Perquimans County he
the son of the late Noah and
Mary Bunch Felton. He was a retired
farmer and a member of Anderson
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Elizabeth Reed Felton; two daugh
ters. Mrs. Gerald (Betty Ann) Gre
gory of Virginia Beach, Va. and Mrs.
Len (Becky) Boynton of Rt. 2, Hert
ford ; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Smith
of Halifax and Mrs. Mary Alice Floyd
of Orrum; 5 grandchildren and 1
great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held Thurs
day, April 30, at2:00 p.m. in the Swin
dell Funeral Home Chapel with the
Rev. Bobby Jordan and the Rev.
Henry Bizzell officiating. Burial fol
lowed in Cedarwood Cemetery.

well, 51, of the 200 block of Bute St., a
rigger, died April 28, 1987, in a hospi
tal.
Mr. Cardwell, a Philadelphia na
tive, is survived by a daughter, Mary
A. Cardwell of Grimeland, N.C. ; two
stepsons, James L. Winslow of Gri
mesland and David L. Winslow of
Vallejo, Calif.; his mother, Mary B.
Cardwell of Norwood, Pa. ; and three
brothers, Andrew Cardwell of
Greensboro, N.C., Donald Cardwell
of Philadelphia and Larry Cardwell
of Norwood.
The funeral was conducted in Phil
adelphia. Gramham Funeral Home,
Chesapeake, is handling arrange
ments.
ALBERT W. HUGO
HOBBSVILLE? Albert Washing
ton Hugo, 78, died April 29 at 4 p.m. in
Camden County due to a boating ac
cident.
The funeral was conducted Friday
at 2 p.m. in Warwick Swamp Baptist
Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill.
Burial was in Westlawn Memorial
Cemetery. Twiford's Memorial Cha
pel was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Hugo was a native of Norfolk,
Va., and had lived in Hobbsville most
of his life. He was a retired aircraft
mechanic from the Norfolk Naval Air
Station and a member of Warwick
Baptist Church.
Hugo was the son of the late George
Francis and Katie Meheger Hugo
and the husband of the late Hattie
Lane Hugo.
Survivors include five daughters,
Mrs. Nancy Gregson and Mrs.
Brenda Spivey both of Elizabeth
City, Mrs. Venovah Guthrie of Or
lando, Fla.; Mrs. Edla Harrell of
Hobbsville and Mrs. Betty Dabbs of
Austin, Texas; a son, Clifton Hugo of
Las Vegas, Nev.; nine grandchil
dren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Moo
day at 3:30 p.m. in the Swindell Fune
ral Chapel with the Rev. Raymond
Needham officiating. Burial followed
in Cedarwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jack Robertson,
Steve Davenport, Eugene Daven
port, Keith Wood and Michael Davis.

A native of Belvidere, he was the
the son of the late George Alden and
Harriet Ann Copeland Chappell. For
merly, he had been a dean of Wingate
College, and had been a dean of
Wingate College, and had also served
as dean of student personnel at Sand
ills Community College in Pinehurst
and as its interim president.
Chappell was a Mason for more
than 60 years during which time he
served as master of the lodge. He
was a member of First Baptist
Church of Wilson where he served as
chairman of the board of deacons and
teacher of the men's adult class.
Survivors include a son, Jerry
Chappell of Warner Robins, Ga.; a
sister, Mrs. Essie Twine of Virginia
Beach; a brother, Fernado Chappell
of Elizabeth City ; and three grand
children.
The funeral will be conducted by
the Rev. W.R. Bussey at 11 a.m. Fri
day at Evergreen Memorial Gar
dens. Thomas-Yelverton West Nash
Chapel is handling the arrange
ments.

way 17, Hertford, N.C. on May 12, at
1:00 until 4:00 p.m. Mr. Wendell Hall,
ADD consultant, Region I will be con
ducting a workshop on Prevention of
Alcohol and Drug Education. The
public is invited to attend.

Leadership Conference held March
26-29, 1987, headquartered at the Ra
disson hotel in High Point, NC.
The five students participated in
four different competitive events
along with various workshops; rec
ognition banquet; business and vot
ing delegates sessions; an awards
program; installation of district' and
state officers; and viewed tip 'city
the furniture and hosiery capita) of
the world. The FBLA accompanying
