In every county of the United States, there is an individual who or ganizes volunteers, parents and ath letics for their local Special Olym pics. In some places it is a physicial education teacher, or classroom tea cher, college student, parent, recre ation director or just an interested volunteer. Perquimans County Spe cial Olympic Coordinator is an active individual. She is involved with many school, church and community pro jects. She is also the TMH teacher at the high school Our coordinator is Kathy Ansink She strives for excellence. Kathy, along with thousands of other coordi nators are to be saluted. Her striving is a labor of love? a love for others. The "others" include students and young adults who have heard repeat edly that "you can't." Making sense out of annual reports A spice manufacturer laces its ver sion with a new scent each year. (Last year's was Chinese Five Spices.) A financial data supplier puts its on video cassette. And a ma jor food products company included 'cents off coupons in its. But once you get beyond these frills, all annual reports follow basically the same pattern for providing information. The annual report is, without ques tion, a valuable source of information whether you're a shareholder or po tential investor or someone consid ering a job offer with the company in question. But according to the North Carolina Association e( CPAs, you sometimes have to read between the lines to get the full benefit of the con tents of an annual report. Begin your analysis with the first section which generally contains the chief executive's letter to sharehold ers and management's discussion of the company's condition. The letter generally highlights the company's financial data, summarizes the year's events and details the compa ny's goals for the future. In addition, many chief executives use the letter as a forum to I i|n mi management's position on revelant social or public policy issues. While the letter to sharehaldtn makes every attempt to pot the company's beat foot forward, a good letter will point out the firm's Be sus0ch>us of reviews that stress the future? this may be a sign the i iinpan] doesn't want to talk about the present. Also be wary of special themes. Sometimes when a company dal trouble, it gfm the annual re port a special focus. An anual report It's a good idea to go back and read the annual reports of the past few years to test a chief executive's cred ibility and determine how good man agement's predictions have been. Look to see how projections made in the the past compare with the cor poration's subsequent results. How did the CEO's promise to increase the earnings of the company fare? Were research and development pro jects completed on schedule and within the budget outlined by the chief executive? If read carefully, the section called "Management's Discussion and Analysis of the Financial Condition and Results of Operation is" can pro vide gainful insight. The Securities and Exchange Com mission requires this section to in clude information about liquidity, ca pitial resources and results of operations. The balance sheet and income statement form the core of the an nual report. The balance sheet shows where the company stood on a partic ular date and as such should be viewed as a snapshot rather than a moving picture. The balance sheet is divided into two parts. One part shows what the company owns? its assets. The other shows what the company on? its liabilities? and its net worth or shareholder's equity. In short, the balance sheet reveals the book value of the company; it? economic value may be significantly different. The company's net worth (or financial statement piapoaes to nothing more than total assets minus total liabilities.
