HERTFORD? Saturday may have
been one of the few times in his life
that Jim "Catfish" Hunter was at a
loss for words.
As Charles Woodard spoke Satur
day afternoon, on the high school
football field, in the warm Perqui
mans County sun Jimmy began to
squirm in his chair as his eyes filled
with tears.
Later as he stood in front of some
2,000 people, his friends and neigh
bors, to express his gratitude for the
countywide celebration it was seve
ral minutes before be could gain his
composure, and thank everyone.
This heart warming scene came at
the conclusion of a program during
which city and county made presen
tations to honor the former major
league baseball pitcher, and friends
shared food memories of days gone
by.
In his thank-you speech to the
crowd, Hunter payed tribute to seve
ral people including his wife Helen,
his parents, Abbott and Lillie
Hunter, his brothers and sisters, and
God.
" I want to tell everyone that you
can't do it all by yourself. Every
one's got to have help," said Hunter.
During the program Hunter was
presented with a resolution and a
proclamation frorc the county, akng
with an artist's rendition of a mon
ument which the county had com
missioned to be placed on the court
bouse green in downtown Hertford.
W. W. "Welly" White, chairman of
the county commissioners presented
Hunter with a picture of the two by
six foot monument which was done
by Bruce White, Lisa Sawyer, and
Deborah Coates of Perquimans
County High School. The monument
which includes a picture of Huntsr,
and an inscription which prwMss
highlights of Hunter's career will be
made of black granite, and accord
ing to White will be placed downtown
within the next few weeks.
Mayor Bill Cos of Hertford also
announced that School street which
runt beside the high school athletic
fields has been renamed Jimmy
Hunter Drive in honor of Hunter,
and presented him with a street sign
bearing the street's new name.
In addition to the many presenta
tions by the county and town Mends
such as Dr . Parker Cheason, Francis
Combs, and Charles Woodard re
flected on fond memories. Pick 19
games, make do bats, and growing
up in a town where baseball games
ranked high on the list of priorities
for family outings.
At the conclusion of the program
Jimmy was presented with a new
11(7 automatic shotgun courtesy of
the Remington Fire Arms Company,
and guests were invited to share in
the free pig ptckin, and to stay for
the old timers game which brought
to a finish the dsy's activities.
