graduates
Susanne Boa Winslow of Hertford
was among the approximately 300
young women graduated from Peace
College during the 119th commence
ment May t. She received the Asso
ciate of Arts of Science in Business
degree.
Miss Winslow is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Cecil E. .Winslow of 733
Gaston Drive.
Graduation exercises were held on
the front lawn of the campus in front
of historic Main Hall. According to
tradition, graduates wore long, white
dresses and carried red roses.

Mizell gradates
Randall Keith Mizelle, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Alvin F. Mizelle, Rt. I,
Hertford, received his Master of Arts
degree in Industrial Organizational
Psychology on May 9th from East
Carolina University.
During his college career, Randall
served as president of Psi Chi Honor
Society in Psychology, vice-president
and projects committee chairman of
Gamma Beta Phi Honor and Service
Organization, and taught Introduc
tory-Level Psychology courses at the
University. He was a member of the
Honor Roll and Dean's List and re
ceived the Outstanding Service
Award from Gamma Beta Phi Honor
Society.

Jackson, Sr., 82, of 106 Dobbe Street,
Hertford, died Friday morning, May
8, 1987, at 1:19 a.m. in Chowan Hospi
tal, Eden ton.
A native of Perquimans County be
was the son of the late Joseph and
Alethia Umphlett Jackson and the
husband of the late Pearl Futrell
Jackson and also the late Levena
Jackson. He was a retired farmer
and Seafood Merchant and a very ac
tive member of the Hertford Baptist
Church where he was a lifetime Dea
con. Jackson was a former member
of the Perquimans County Draft
Board and Board of Directors of the
Farmers Home Administration.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
Lindsey Ray (Audrey) Bunch of
Route 3, Edenton ; a son, Cmdr. Colon
S. Jackson, Jr., of Charleston, S.C.;
four stepdaughters, Mrs. James M.
Hodges of Washington, N.C., Mrs.
Claude Moore of Lakeland, Fla.,
Mrs. Norman Potter of Chesapeake,
Va. and Mrs. J.E. Harris of Virginia
Beach, Va.; a brother, Conroy Jack
son of Norfolk, Va. and four grand
children.
Funeral services were held Sun
day, May 10, at 3:00 p.m. in the Swin
dell Funeral Chapel with the Rev.
Raymond Needham and the Rev.

Thomas joins
ECSU staff
Gloria B. Thomas of Hertford,
North Carolina, has been selected as
one of two secretaries for the Eliza
beth City State University Academic
Development Program. Mrs.
Thomas began her new job on Fri
day, May 1.
Before joining the ECSU Academic
Development Program, Mrs.
Thomas had been employed for eight
years as cashier-records clerk for the
Albemarle Electric Corporation lo
cated in Hertford. Mrs. Thomas,
prior to her Albemarle experience,
had been secretary to the superinten
dent of the Perquimans County
Board of Education.
"I offer eleven years of secretarial
experience," Thomas said when
asked what skills she would bring to
her new position, "integrity, honesty
and the ability to work well with peo
ple."
She is very active in the commu
nity of Hertford, located fifteen miles
south of Elizabeth City, where she
serves as secretary of the Demo

Morton, 94, of Jacksonville, died Fri
day, May 8, 1967.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at 11:00 a.m. in the Jones Fune
ral Chapel. Burial followed in Jack
sonville City Cemetery.
Survivors include a son, Grover
Morton of Hertford; four daughters,
Mrs. Mary Bowson of Clarkston,
Wash., Mrs. Sherry Brown and Mrs.
Beatrice Ledbetter, both of Jackson
ville and Mrs. Joy Bailey of Greens
boro; two brothers, Horace Dixon of
Dunn and Ebbo Dixon of Rocky
Point; two sisters, Mrs. Eppie Rho
des of Jacskonville and Mrs. Ethel
Mills of Sneads Ferry; 31 grandchil
dren; 57 great-grandchildren and 8
great-great-grandchildren.

sudden illness.
A native of Chowan County he was
a lifetime resident of Perquimans
County. He was the son of Mrs. Wi
nifred Swain Hudson of Hertford and
the late Arvin Washington Hudson
and worked as a carpenter with the
Harvey Point Testing Facility. Mr.
Hudson was a member of the Bereau
Church of Christ and attended the
Hertford United Methodist Church,
was a member of the Winfall Volun
teer Fire Department and a former
of the Perquimans County Jaycees.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Sandra Smith Hudson; two daugh
ters, Miss Wendy Hudson and Miss
Jamie Hudson, both of the home; his
mother, a sister, Mrs. William Pres
ton (Sandra) Nixon of Wilmington;
and a brother, W.A. "Billy" Hudson
of Lawrenceville, Va.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at 2:00 p.m. at the graveside in
Cedarwood Cemetery with the Rev.
Daniel LeRoy and the Rev. Henry
Bizzell officiating. Swindell Funeral
Home was in charge of arrange
ments.
Pallbearers were Frank Brown,
Ronnie Baker, Walter Jones, Tony
Bass, Wayne Winslow and Larry
Gibbs. Members of the Winfall Vol
unteer Fire Department served as
Honorary Pallbearers.

HERTFORD-James R. "Jim"
Davenport, 65, of 609 S. Church
Street, Hertford died Friday evening,
May 1, 1987, in Norfolk General Hos
pital.
A native of Norfolk, he was the son
of the late James Alton and Mary
Brickhouse Davenport. He retired
from the Civil Service as a meat cut
ter. He was a member of the Hertford
Baptist Church and was a Navy vet
eran of World War n.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs.
Marjorie White Davenport; two
daughters, Mrs. Bobby (Carolyn)
Hilliard of Angier and Mrs. Henry
(Nancy) Wood of Coin jock; a son,
Marshall (Marty) Davenport of Win
fall; a sister, Mrs. Betty Burnette of
Louisburg; three brothers, Stancil
Davenport of Norfolk, Beazer Daven
port of Aho6kie and Bill Davenport of
Louisburg; and 7 grandchildren.

day at 3:30 p.m. in the Swindell Fune
ral Chapel with the Rev. Raymond
Needham officiating. Burial followed
in Cedarwood Cemetery.
