Highlights of the third annual
very special Arts Extravaganza
According to organizers, visitors, and participants the third annual Very
Special Arts Extravaganza was just that, very special.
For two days, last Thursday and Friday, Union School's gym and the Union
School grounds came alive with students' art, exhibits and demonstrations as
over 400 spectators visited the extravaganza.
The Arts Extravaganza has many reasons for occuring according to Mrs.
Deborah Coates, and Ms. Joan Mansfield, the co-chairman for this year's ex
travaganza.
First the extravaganza provides a way to let people know what the students
in our county schools can do. It lets them show off the artwork that they have
been doing throughout the year, and the extravaganza lets our school system
show how arts are used as a valuable educational resource in the school sys
tem's curriculum.
The Arts Extravaganza program also allows students to see arts from the
local community, and allows them to see the part that arts play in the Perqui
mans County community.
Throughout last Thursday and Friday the gym at Union School was filled
with displays which contained students' artwork from all four of the county
schools, displays of local artwork and craft items done by local artists and other
members of the community, as well as the sounds of music and other perform
ing arts.
The works displayed encompassed many different forms of art media, and
included everything from dried flower arrangements done in baby food jars to a
video tape produced on a recent trip to the Soviet Union.
In addition to the student's artwork which was on display, several art stu
dents from the high school and Union School were on hand Thursday and Friday
to give art demonstrations. Paper, pottery, corn shuck dolls, wood items, por
traits, pine needle art, and other things were made throughout the two days,
and students were given the opportunity to watch other students painting on t
shirts, arms and faces, as well as seeing gymnastics, square dancing, modern
dance performances, and much much more.
On Friday the Perquimans County High School FFA group held their barbe
qued chicken supper from 4:00 p. m until 7:00 p.m.. Over 600 tickets were sold
for the supper, and members of the FFA alumni including Pete Riddick, Billy
Williams, Ed Nixon, Glen Twine, Jimmy Hunter, Joe Tunnell, Phil Winslow,
Walker Rayburn, and Tim Phistic as well as parents of FFA members worked
to make the dinner a success.
According to Harrell Thach, advisor for the FFA, over 800 chickens were
cooked, and the group was very pleased with the turnout and the community's
support.
On Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. the Perquimans County High School chorus,
and the womens' chorus, under the direction of Mr. Lyn Winslow performed for
visitors to the extravaganza.
The festival was brought to a close on Friday evening with the sounds of the
Perquimans County High School Jazz Band. The jazz band as well as the 6th,
7th, 8th, and high school band performed on the Union School lawn at from 8:00
p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m..
Next year school officials are planning to hold the fourth annual very special
Arts Extravaganza at the high school.
