Local News Area obituaries I WINSTON E. LANE. JR. HERTFORD? Winston Earl Lane, Jr., S4, of Route 5, 167, Hertford, died suddenly Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 1987, in his home. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of Winston E. Lane, Sr. and Mrs. Lillie Mae Jordan Lane of Route S, Hertford and the husband of -1 Mrs. Ima Jean Bass Lane. He was a commercial fisherman and had for - - merly worked as a fanner. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of Korea. Besides his wife and parents, survi vors include two daughters, Mrs. Lee (Karen) Sundstrom of Edenton and Miss Lisa Lane of the home; three sons, Dr. Winston Earl Lane, III of Greenville, Robert K. "Bobby" Lane of Rt. 5, Hertford and Paul Lane of the home; and a sister, Mrs. Annie Lou Chappell of Route 5, Hertford. " Funeral services were held Thurs day, June 11, at 3:00 p.m. in the Swin dell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Gordon Shaw officiating. Burial fol lowed in Cedarwood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Tommy Danc hise, Crafton Overton, Clarence Chappell, III, Charles H. Ward, Rus sell Barclift and Joe Ward Proctor. MATTIE H. BERRY HERTFORD-Mrs. Mattie Howell Berry, 86, of 606 S. Church Street, Hertford, died at 1 : 15 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 1987, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County she was the widow of Edgar Young Berry and daughter of the late John and """ Elizabeth Williams Howell. She was ' ' ' a former clerk with J.C. Blanchard Co. and a member of Bethlehem Church of Christ and its Women's Ch ristian Service. Surviors include two sons, Edgar Y. Berry, Jr. of Elizabeth City and Dan Berry of Hertford; two sisters, Mrs. Cassie Sawyer of Greenville and Mrs. Lillian Stubbs of Norfolk, Va.; a brother, Arthur Howell of Lawrenceville, Va.; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Graveside service were held Sun day at 1:30 p.m. in Cedarwood Ceme tery with the Rev. Don Burgess and the Rev. Raymond Needham officiat ing. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. BETTY S. CARTWRIGHT HERTFORD ? Mrs. Betty Simp6on Cartwright, 87, formerly of Route 3, Hertford, died at 12:10 a.m., Satur day, June 13, 1967, in Chowan Hospi tal. A native of Perquimans County she was the widow of James Edward Cartwright and daughter of the late Will and Mary Umphlett Simpson. She was a member of the New Hope Assembly of God Church. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Emma McGhee of Franklin, Va. and Mrs. Vertley Groton of Edenton; two brothers, Robert C. Holland of Route 4, Edenton and L.H. Holland of Vir ginia Beach. Va. and several step grandchildren. Funeral services were held Mon day at 2:00 p.m. in the New Hope As sembly of God Church with the Rev. Samuel Taylor and Mrs. Lucy Winslow officiating. Burial followed in the Family Cemetery at Elizabeth City. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Evans, son of Nancy P. f and William D. Evans, Jr. of Route 1, ?. Tyner, NC, recently deployed on a 5 four month deployment to the Arctic j aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Northwind, homeported in Wilming j ton, NC. During the deployment Evans will 1 - participate in a month of training in Norfolk, VA, following research off the Newfoundland coast, and ice es cort duties on Greenland's west coast. Upon completion of the deploy ment, Evans will make port visits to Gronnedal and Christianshaab, Greenland; and Halifax and Prince Edward Island, Canada; before re turning to Wilmington, NC. A 1971 graduate of Needham B. Broughton High School, Raleigh, NC, he joined the Coast Guard in October 1975. : Barclift receives scholarships Miss Linda Carol Barclift, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. C.D. Barclift, Route 2, Hertford, has recently be come the recipient of three schol arships. Miss Barclift, who graduated from [ Perquimans High School on June 10, I * 1987, received the Valedictorian ?
