Of local interest Museum to offer workshop ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Mu seum of the Albemarle's children's workshops will be starting in August. Workshops have been created that will give students the chance to ex plore all the neatest things that make this region special. They're designed (or a range of ages, kindergarten through ninth grade. So come on out and spend the day at the Museum! Workshop one is dealing with the Pirates! Blackbeard will be at the Museum at 10:00a.m., Thursday, Au gust 6th His program will last until 11:00 a.m. and is for students grades K-3. There will be a 50 cent fee. On Thursday, August 13th, kids in grades K-8 interested in marine life can come to the Museum at 11:00 a.m. for a field trip. Marine biologist from the Elizabeth City office in North Carolina Marine Fisheries will give a presentation at the Museum showing kids how to "read" fish scales, and showing different kinds of critters and such. We will then board a bus to go to the Edenton National Fish Hatchery for a tour. We will re turn to the Museum by 3:00 p.m. Stu dents need to bring a lunch, and there is a charge of $2 50 A geology trip to the beach is planned on Thursday, August 20th with ECSU professor Maurice Pow ers. It is planned for students in 4th 8th grades. They will leave the Mu seum at 11:00 am to travel down to the beach to learn about wave action, beach erosion and movement, and other phenomena. They will return to the Museum at 5:00 pm. Again, ev eryone must bring a lunch. The fee of $4.50 covers transportation costs. The fourth and final workshop of the season is on Indian tool making Archaeologist Steve Claggett, from Raleigh will teach students how to produce stone tools, as well as dis cuss the use of other materials in the area, and how and why they may have been used. There are two differ ent sessions for this program on Tuesday, August 25th The first ses sion is at 10:00 a.m. and is for stu dents in grades 4th-6th The second session is at 1:00 p.m. for students grades 7th-9th. There is a 50 cent fee for each child. This is a great chance to liven things up just when summer is begin ning to get boring. It also is a great program for kids at daycare or at clubs who need a change from the same old thing there. Magna Carta on display " Roads to Liberty : Magna Carta to the Constitution" is an exhibit in a mobile trailer which contains the priceless Lincoln Cathedral Magna Carta, the "great charter" signed by King John of England in 1215. The ex hibit also contains original or copies of the Declaration of Independence, the Emancipation Proclamation; fa cimiles of the Mayflower Compact, the Articles of Confederation, and the Northwest Ordinance; rare coins, pictures, maps, and newspapers of the Colonies period. The "Roads to Liberty: Magna Carta to the Constitution" trailer it self is an impressive sight? an 18 wheel, red-white-and blue rolling mu seum measuring 40' x 13 (not includ ing entrance and exit ramps). Dos sants travel with the exhibit, and they assist local hosts and hostesses in greeting the public and showing them through the trailer. In order to avoid long lines, free ad mission tickets will be available at the tour site for certain times to enter the exhibit. Norfleet, COA dean of in struction, released the names of the honor students this week. The list represents 9.3 percent of the overall spring enrollment of $1293 curriculum students at the commu nity college. Perquimans scholars comprised 11.6 percent of those qual ifying for the recognition. Norfleet explained that in order to become eligible, students must com plete a minimum of 12 quarter-hours of course work with a 3.5 grade point average, and have no grade below "C." The highest possible GPA attai nable is a 4.0, he said. Perquimans residents recognized for their academic excellence in clude Shelia Best. Levi Brothers, Jr., Cynthia Eure, Virginia Ford, Phyllis Foxwell, Irma Horner, Eric James, Teresa Johnson, Mary Lane, Yosiah Lord, Terry Mallory, Page Stone, Sharon Werner, and Crystal Wyatt. Pictured above is a tomato grown by Hal Locke of Snug Harbor. The tomato weighed in at over 2.25 pounds and is a beefmaster variety tomato. The tomato also measured five and one h&lf inches in diameter. This is Mr. Locke's first year gardening. His plants were fertilized with Miracle Grow plant food. Perquimans area obituaries EMMET FRANCIS WOOD. SR. HERTFORD? Emmett Frances Wood, Sr., 83, of Route 4, Hertford, and formerly of Virginia Beach, died Monday, July 27, 1987, in Chowan Hospital. A native of California, Pa., he was the husband of the late Sophia Kaloninski Wood. He was a retired inspector with the Norfolk Naval Air Station, a member of St. Gregory The Great Catholic Church in Virginia beach and a former Marine. Survivors include a son. Emmett F.
