God shows followers the way, the truth, and light of his world God's Called Out People (Colo* sums 3 : 1-3 ;4:5; 1 Peter I:M7>. "Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priethood, a holy nation, a pe culiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of daftness into His marvelous light." (I Peter 2:9). These words were spoken by Peter in a letter which he sent to the first cen tury Christians, who had been driven ' out of Jerusalem and scattered throughout Pootus, Galatia, Cappa docia, Ausia and Bithynia, provinces of Asia Minor. Although the letter was addressed to these people specif ically, in a greater sense it is ad dressed to all Christians in all the centuries since, even today. Let us first consider some background. The city of Jerusalem was a bub of heaven. Many Jewish people had been converted to Christianity, the day of Pentecost had come and thou sands more had been converted on that day and the days following. The ranks of Christians were swelling as the Gospel was preached and taught and the Holy Spirit was doing His work. Pew were leaving and going back home. Most of them wanted to stay in this city of Christian excite ment. Ihere was so much to learn yet about Christ's Gospel, and the joys of worship, prayer, preaching and fellowship. There was a great shar ing spirit among them. It was a great place to be. But Christ had left His Great Commission with them. They were to go into all the world and pre ach and teach His Gospel. The reli gious establishment, and the Roman Government would not stand for all these people to be in Jerusalem for long. They were surely disrupting the status quo. The persecution began, and the Christians in Jerusalem had to flee for personal security. Stephen was put to death. Phillip left for Sa maria where he had great success for the Lord. As they went out into the world the principle of the wolves and the lambs set in - it would not be easy. There would be hardships and perse ration as they ciume into conflict with the worldly powers. They would have to keep in mind that they were a called out people, enabled by '.he Holy Spirit Thx: question then is - called from wha.it - to what? The Higher View. (Colossi a ns 3:1 3; 4:5-6) Paul's letter to the Christians at Colosse gives us far more than a hint as to what a called out people are to be. Read the Ave verses given above. They would, ot! course, be in this world, but the.)/ were not of this world. Their re>al world was God's heavenly kingdom. They were to have a^ higher <?-iew, to "Seek those things which are above" and "Set your affection on things above, not things on this earth." Paul is saying that when we become Christians, our life is dead to the worldly ways and that our lives are "hid with Christ in God." We are called from this worldly attitude of living because this is not our real home. Called to a Separated Life, (l Peter 2:9-17) Peter tells us that as Christians we are called to be separated from the people of this world. Not by distance, of course, but by character and ac tion. We live among people who are not Christians, but we are different from them because of our relationship to God, and our responsi bilities for carrying on His kingdom's work. We have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light as noted in verse nine. Hie spiritual light of revelation and love. These verses tell us something else, too. Be fore we became Christians we were not a people, a unified group. We were scattered individuals - Greeks and Jews, Barbarians, Chinese, all races and nationalities. But with sal vation, through Christ, we were welded into one - the people of God. A royal priesthood, a holy nation, a pe culiar people, but real. Youth weekend set Attention! It is right here on us. Seat belts for xJafcta automobiles? No, seat belts for ?fMhe-road safety for use in shop pftg' carts in supermarkets and de partment stores. Since the Consumer Product Safety ?Sbatmission first reported that more than 9,000 children under the age of 5 injured from falling out of shop ping carts annually, the amount of ?"safe supermarkets" has doubled. Tfcfas due to a commendable display of cooperation between consumers and private industry working to gether toward the common goal of Child safety month marks victory for kids bringing down that alarming number of accidents. But; unlike the manda tory use of automobile seat belts and child car seats in many states, shop ping cart seat belts are being in stalled voluntarily. It is the over whelming acceptance and appreciation of the seat belts by peo ple that shop with small children that has prompted a growing number of supermarkets to install the straps. This rapidly expanding movement has not stoppod or rested with super markets. When bearing about these efforts to ensure child safety, LUVS Diapers, a division of Procter k Gamble, sponsored 1,000,000 Safe Straps for use in shopping carts throughout the United States. WILLS, Pastor SALT - ANYirHING THAT GIVES LIVELINESS, FRESHNESS, EXTENSIVELY PREPARED FOR USE AS A SEASONING: A PRESERVATIVE FOR FOOD. (Baking Soda is a salt)(A sailor is sometimes referred to as being a "salt" if he has been around for some time.) Epsom salt is used as a laxative (action). Those Christians who nev er do anything for the church or anyone, can be referred to as a girain of salt. Scriptually speaking, salt can be referred (to many things. Leviti cus 2:13 states, "And every oblation of thy meat offering shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God bo be lacking from thy meat offering: with all thine offerings, thou shalt offer salt. II Chronicles 13:5 states, "Ought ye not to know that the Lord God of Israel gave the Kingdom over Israel to David forever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? ' ' It becomes a symbol of a binding covenant. In II Kings 2:20 & 21 , it becomes a healing and cleansing aid when God instructed Elisha and he said, " bring me a new cruse and put salt therein. And they brought it to him." Verse 21 says, "And he went forth unto th<* spring of the waters and cast the salt in there, and said, 'Thus saith the Lord, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land." What does Job say? Job states, "Can that which is unsavory be eaten without salt or is there any taste in (the white of an egg? Thus, salt becomes a stimulant to the appetite. Salty Christians will be anxious to taste and see that the Lo rd is good, St. Luke 14:34 and 35th states that salt is good, but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned? Is it neither fit for the land, nor yet for the dunghill; but men cast it out. He that hath ear to hear, let him hear. Thus, it becomes a preventive from decay. Old age. Mark 9:50 refers to it as a promoter of peace when he said, "Salt is good, but if the salt have lost his saltness, wherewith shall ye season it? Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another. Salty Christians should be an evidence of grace, for we find Paul writing to the Colossiand in the fourth Chapter and the sixth verse, saying, "Let your speach be always with the grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man." It is check-up time! Christians, have you lost your savour? How savoury is the conduct you display in your everyday contacts with others? Can others tell by your actions that you live in close fellowship with Jesus? Is your word as dependable as an Old Testament "Covenant of Salt"? Does your influence have a healing virtue and create an appetite for Christ? Do you seek to retard sin and encourage others to live peacefully? Is there abundant evi dence of his transforming grace in your life? Today, tonight and every day, as we go into the world of corruption, may we keep in mind that the Lord need, want and expects you and me to be a preserving "Salty Christian". There is nothi- wrong with God's world. Just the individuals in it have lost thdir savour.
