Lloyd Beecber Nixon, 70, of Route 3, Box 106, Hertford, died Friday morning, October 16, 1987 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. A native of Perquimans County, he was the son of the late James A. and Lillie Chappell Nixon. He was a re tired farmer and an Army veteran of World War II. As a member of the 531st Army En gineers, he served in England, Af rica, Italy and Europe. He was in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge and helped with laying the first pontoon bridge acnxs the Rhine River in Germany. His awards included the Croix De Guerra with Palm, the French Four ragere, Distinguished Unit Badge, the European Theater of Operations ribbons with seven Battle Stars and the World War II Victory and Occu pation ribbons. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Margaret N. Hurdle of Hert ford, Mrs. W. W. (Myrtle) Bundy of Route 5, Hertford and Mrs. Calvin (Kathleen) Banks of Route 3, Hert ford; two brothers, James Thomas Nixon and Walter Nixon, both of Route 3, Hertford ; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2:30 p.m in the Swindell Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Higgins offi ciating. Burial followed in Cedar wood Cemetery. Pallbearers were Walter Ray Nixon, Lloyd W. Shannon, ^grandson of Martha Sheard of Rural T Route 4, Hertford, N.C., has received 'the parachutist badge upon comple tion of the three-week airborne 'course at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. During the first week of training, students underwent a rigorous physi cal training program and received ! instruction in the theory of parachut ; ing. The second week they received practical training by jumping from 34-foot and 250-foot towers. The final week they made five staticline par achute jumps including one night jump. Harrell has participated in the NATO-spon sored exercise, Return of Forces to Germany '87 (REFORGER). The exercise was designed to eval uate plans and support agreements between NATO member nations, to exercise West Germany's ability to support deploying forces and to test the ability of European-based units to quickly link reinforcing units with their pre-positioned equipment. Johnson has participated in "Cobra Gold," a joint American-Thai training exer cise held in Karat, Thailand. The exercise was designed to strengthen the ability of the Royal Thai Armed Forces to defend Thai land and to exercise each nation's ca pabilities to carry out joint planning, command and control and execution of air and land operations.
