LLOYD BEECHER NIXON
Hertford? Lloyd Beecber Nixon, 70,
of Route 3, Box 106, Hertford, died
Friday morning, October 16, 1987 in
Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.
A native of Perquimans County, he
was the son of the late James A. and
Lillie Chappell Nixon. He was a re
tired farmer and an Army veteran of
World War II.
As a member of the 531st Army En
gineers, he served in England, Af
rica, Italy and Europe. He was in
Belgium during the Battle of the
Bulge and helped with laying the first
pontoon bridge acnxs the Rhine
River in Germany.
His awards included the Croix De
Guerra with Palm, the French Four
ragere, Distinguished Unit Badge,
the European Theater of Operations
ribbons with seven Battle Stars and
the World War II Victory and Occu
pation ribbons.
Survivors include three sisters,
Mrs. Margaret N. Hurdle of Hert
ford, Mrs. W. W. (Myrtle) Bundy of
Route 5, Hertford and Mrs. Calvin
(Kathleen) Banks of Route 3, Hert
ford; two brothers, James Thomas
Nixon and Walter Nixon, both of
Route 3, Hertford ; several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday
at 2:30 p.m in the Swindell Funeral
Home with Rev. Larry Higgins offi
ciating. Burial followed in Cedar
wood Cemetery.

Nixon, Lloyd W. Nixon, Donnie
Nixon, Woody Bundy, Jr., Lloyd Wal
lace Nixon, Jr. and Michael Wayne
Nixon.

ling! Forbes, 79, of the 1200 block of
Pascal Place, Norfolk, Va., a retired
salesperson, died Wednesday, Octo
ber 14, 1987.
A native of Whites ton, she was the
widow of Cecil T. Forbes, Sr. and was
a member of Ocean View Baptist
Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
Marjorie Forbes Walker of Norfolk;
6 grandchildren and a great-grand
child.
Graveside services were held Sat
urday at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood
Cemetery, Hertford, by the Rev.
George Boyd.
Graveside services were con
ducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday in Che
sapeake Memorial Gardens by the
Rev. Robert E. Merritt.
Information was provided by Swin
dell Funeral Home, Hertford.
WARREN HAYWOOD SMITH
HERTFORD-Warren Haywood
Smith, 82, of Route 2, Hertford, died
Saturday morning, October 17, 1987,
in Albemarle Hospital.
A native of Perquimans County he
was the son of the late Warren Wat
son and Annie Cope land Smith. He
was a retired farmer and a member
of Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church.
Survivor's include his wife, Mrs.
Sarah Pritchard Smith; two daugh
ters, Mrs. Calvin (Clara) Lane of
Route 3, Hertford and Mrs. Eula S.
Smith of Route 2, Hertford; four lis
ten, Mrs. Annie Chalk of Norfolk,
Va? Mr* Cornelia Phillips of Hert
ford, Mrs. Eunice Lane of Route 2,
Hertford and Mrs. Lessie Onley of
Elizabeth City; a brother, Johnnie
Smith of Route 2, Hertford; 2 grand
children and 2 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at 2:00 p m. in Bagley Swamp
Wesleyan Church with Rev. Sam
Swinney officiating. Burial followed
in Cedarwood Cemetery. Swindell
Funeral Home was in charge of ar
rangements.
Pallbearers were Gene Phillips,
Crafton Onley, J.H. Smith, Clifton
Chalk, Jack Phillips and Clyde
Chalk.
Swindell Funeral Home was in
charge of local arrangements.

Court, Chesapeake, died Friday, Oc
tober 16, 1987 in his home.
A native of Norfolk, he was a 1967
graduate of Indian River High School
and was employed with Farm Fresh
Supermarket.
Survivors include his parents,
Richard H. and Ramona T. Merritt,
both of Chesapeake; two brothers,
Kenneth Wayne Merritt of Elon Col
lege and Michael Jeffery Merritt of
Chesapeake; and his grandparents,
Mrs. Ola V. Merritt of Hertford, Mrs.
Naomi Stallings of Manns Harbor
and Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Eason of Che

'the parachutist badge upon comple
tion of the three-week airborne
'course at the U.S. Army Infantry
School, Fort Benning, Ga.
During the first week of training,
students underwent a rigorous physi
cal training program and received
! instruction in the theory of parachut
; ing. The second week they received
practical training by jumping from
34-foot and 250-foot towers. The final
week they made five staticline par
achute jumps including one night
jump.
He is a 1985 graduate of Perqui
Imans County High School, Hertford.
HORACE E. COHOON
Airman Horace E. Cohoon, son of
Mr and Mrs. Horace A. Cohoon of
Rural Route 4, Hertford, N.C., has
graduated from the U.S. Air Force
security police specialist course at
Lackland Air Force Base, Texas.
Graduates of the course studied
systems security operations, tactics
and weapons training and earned
credits toward an associate degree in
applied science through the Commu
nity College of the Air Force.
He is a 1981 graduate of Perqui
mans High School, Hertford.
TIMOTHY P. HARRELL
Army Spec. 4 Timothy P. Harrell
has participated in the NATO-spon
sored exercise, Return of Forces to
Germany '87 (REFORGER).
The exercise was designed to eval
uate plans and support agreements
between NATO member nations, to
exercise West Germany's ability to
support deploying forces and to test
the ability of European-based units to
quickly link reinforcing units with
their pre-positioned equipment.
Harrell is the son of Fleetwood L.
and Betty J. Harrell of Rural Route 1,
Tyner, N.C.
He is a combat engineer with the
82nd Engineer Battalion in West Ger
many.
The specialist is a 1965 graduate of
John A. Holmes High School, Eden
ton, N.C.
JERRY L. JOHNSON
Army Staff Sgt. Jerry L. Johnson
has participated in "Cobra Gold," a
joint American-Thai training exer
cise held in Karat, Thailand.
The exercise was designed to
strengthen the ability of the Royal
Thai Armed Forces to defend Thai
land and to exercise each nation's ca
pabilities to carry out joint planning,
command and control and execution
of air and land operations.
Johnson is the son of O'Dessa F.
Harrell and stepson of Philip Harrell
of 316 Dobb St., Hertford, N.C.
He is an Infantryman with the 25th
Infantry Division at Schofield Bar
racks, Hawaii.
The sergeant is a 1969 graduate of
Perquimans County Union High
School, N.C.
