Off local interest ? " ? ?nun . Council continued a serious problem in Hertford. The town will also be ordering some signs from the state of North Carolina, which will be posted throughout the town in an added effort to draw peo ple's attention to this problem. Under other business, the council took the following action : The council reviewed the October ABC report, the council reviewed the Octobers po lice report, the council okay'd a bud get amendment for $97,000.00 regard ing the rennovation of the waste treatment plant, the council ap proved a $100 donation to the Perqui mans County Restoration Associa tion, and the council approved a recommendation by the toning board to rezooe a piece of property of the Berry estate from RA to C2. The property is located just behind the new Belo Store. The council also discussed briefly employee hospitalization increases and alternatives, before adjourning into executive session for the purpose of interviewing two canidates for po sitions with the police department. Jason Harrell honored I ?J Jason Harrell Indianapolis? Jason Harrell, Rt. 1, Hertford, won a grand national award in the production demonstra tion contest at the 53rd Annual Na tional Junior Horticultural Associa tion Convention in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 30-Nov. 2. Harrell's presentation was titled "How Sweet It Is". He talked about how to select varieties of sweet corn for commercial production. Harrell, 17, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Harrell. He won state honors in the horticultural produc tion presentation contest during North Carolina 4-H Congress in Ra leigh in July. He was awarded $150.00 toward national convention ex penses. The prize was donated by Southern States Cooperative, Inc. Delegates to the convention com peted against NJHA members from all across the nation in categories such as environmental beautifica tion, gardening, photography, public speaking and production and market ing. They also attended workshops on subjects like landscape design, floral design, and holiday wreath making. Other program activities included tours of historic landmarks, green houses and farms. Youths achieve membership in NJHA by enrolling in the program and taking part in NJHA projects. Members between the ages of IS and 22 may attend the next convention which will be held in Chicago, 111. The NJHA organization is landed by private corporations, agencies and individuals. Area service news PERCELL FELTON Air Force Master Sgt. Percell Fel ton, son of Alphonso and Erma L. Felton of Rural Route 1, Hertford, N. C., has arrived for duty with the 355th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. i Felton, a tactical aircraft mainte nance technician, is a 1972 graduate of Perquimans High School, Hert ford. ACLD meeting set The local Association for Children and Adults with Learning Disabilities (ACLD-east) will meet Thursday, November 12, 1987 at Northeastern High School in Elizabeth City in Room 12 at 7:30 p.m. The presenters for this meeting will be the Devel opmental Evaluation Center Team. Wallace Nelson addresses the area drug coalition on drug and alcohol abuse in our schools during a recent meeting. The group's next meeting will November 30th. Nelson is a member of the Governor's Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse Among Youth. NCSU lanches campaign The North Carolina State Univer sity Alumni Association has launched its 1987-88 Loyalty Fund campaign for Perquimans County. Serving as county chairman and area coordina tor for the fund-raising drive is Wayne Howell of Hertford. Funds raised by the Alumni Asso ciation are used to support academic programs at NCSU. The associa tion's main program, the John T. Caldwell Alumni Scholarship pro gram, currently provides 103 merit based scholarships valued at $3,500 per year for in-state students and $4,700 per year for out-of-state stu dents. In conjunction with the Loyalty Fund campaign, the association also is conducting a fund-raising cam paign for a new campus landmark? the Alumni Centennial Gateway. With contributions from alumni, an lft-foot-high, 128-foot-long stainless steel wall, surrounded by flowering crabapple trees, will be erected at the intersection of Western Boule vard and Gorman Street in Raleigh. Mrs. Hobbs, a native of Sandy Cross, N.C., was the widow of Carroll T. Hobbs. She was a member of Eu reka Baptist Church, Corapeake, N. C., where she was a member of the Missionary Society and Ida K. Brink ley Sunday School. Survivors include a daughter, Mildred H. Small of Suffolk; a sister, Beulah N. Ward of Hobbsville; a brother, Willie Nixon of Hobbsville; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. The funeral was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Hill Underwood Fune ral Home by the Revs. Hines Adams and Willis I. Dowling. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Jeannette Darden O'Sullivan, 92, formerly of Norfolk, Va. died Wednesday, November 4, 1987, in the Brian Care Center Nurs ing Home. She was born October 15, 1895 in Drivers, Va. to the late Jake and Es sie Stokes Darden, and widowed to the late, Henry Clay O'Sullivan. Mrs. O'Sullivan was a retired Civil Service Clerk with the Norfolk Naval Supply Center and a member of The Church Of Ascension in Norfolk, Va. Survivors includes, one step daughter, Mrs. Andrew (Anne) Tay Ward honored Bill Ward of Vision Cable of More head City was recently appointed to the 10th Annual System ACE Compe tition Committee. The Committee is responsible for the establishment of the rules for the System ACE Awards; the cable industry's equiva lent to the broadcast EMMY. Mr. Ward is Program Director of Vision Cable's local origination TV-10 which received a nomination in 1987 for "Overall Commitment To Local Programming" during the Award for Cable Excellence Show in Las Vegas. Only Ave systems in the entire nation were nominated out of 800 entries. This years System ACE Awards will be presented at the National Aca demy of Cable Programming Na tional Show in Los Angeles on May 2nd.
