"We are fortunate to receive this drug on its initial release," said Di rector of Pharmacy, Harry Umph lett, Jr. "Activase is a revolutionary drug and may dissolve a blood clot in 70 percent of the cases." It is available for use by the medi cal staff. Because of the drug's high price, the hospital will make it avail able at acquisition cost, with no mark-up. "This is the first time we are offer ing a drug at cost, but due to the ex pense involved, we feel this would be best for the community," Umphlett said. . The drug has several advantages compared to its predecessor, Strepto kinase, according to Dr. Steve Leong, cardiologist. "Activase has a higher success rate than Streptokinase," I^eong ex plained. "It also wears away in about 3 hours rather than 24 hours. This is important because it allows the phy sician to perform other tests or pro cedures sooner." Leong said that the drug is effec tive in opening clotted blood vessels that cause heart attack, thus reduc ing the size of teh damaged muscle. This may improve the survival rate. In addition, the drug causes no aller gic reactions. "This is a major step in the treat ment of heart attacks because we can reduce the size of the attack, Leong said. "Years ago, when a person had a heart attach, nature took its course. We gave medicine to reduce pain, but not to alter the course of the attack. With the invention of Streptokinase, we were able to destroy the clot. With Activase, we are able to do this selec Thanks Perquimans Co. ' Leon stresses that the most irripor tant element in the treatment ol | heart attacks is time. "It is crucial that a person come to the emergency room at the beginning of a heart attack," Leong said. "V < ~ need to treat the patient as soon as' possible to minimize the damage.
