Chowan Hospital nurse earns certification
Edenton, N.C.? At a time when in
fectious diseases such as AIDS are in
the forefront of the public's mind,
Chowan Hospital's Claire Mills,
R.N., B.S.N., C.I.C., has received
word that she has been granted na
tional certification in the area of in
fection control. Mills, who took the
examiniation of the Certification
Board of Infection Control in Decem
ber, becomes the only certified infec
tion Control Nurse in northeastern
North Carolina.
Mills points out that hospitals have
traditionally worked to minimize the
spread of infection within the institu
tion. However, as rising statistics on
the spread of certain diseases within
the community set off alarms in all
areas of society, health educators
such as Mills have launched aggres
sive campaigns to educate the public,
as well.
Mills has been instrumental in de
veloping AIDS education programs
for area school PTAs and other civic
groups. In the past 18 months, her
outreach effort has informed approx
imately 1,000 people in universal pre
cautions concerning AIDS. In addi
tion, she has visited local day care
centers to discuss child-related infec
tions that they need to be alerted to.
The role of the Infection Control
Nurse in a hospital ranges from mon
itoring community and hospital-ac
quired infections and educating the
staff about infectious disease trans
mission, to being actively involved in
assuring the best quality of care for
Chowan Hospital patients. Mills, who
is also Staff Development Coordina
tor at Chowan, must renew her infec
tion control certificate in five years.
Mills graduated as a Registered
Nurse from Forsyth Memorial Hospi
tal in Winston-Salem in 1974. She
earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nurs
ing from East Carolina University in
1986. She has been on the Chowan
Hospital staff for 11 years.

the Education Wing recently.
Anyone wishing to have his or her
blood pressure checked free of
