Bethel Perquimans County livestock; steals area livetock show! * \ Ai Squealing hogs, baaing sheep, and children impatiently waiting to show their animals in the ring, joined to gether last Tuesday and Wednesday for the 43rd annual Albemarle Area 4-H Livestock Show and Sale. The Pasquotank Livestock Area came to life with the sights and sounds of the annual livestock show, which featured lamb judging on Tuesday, and hog and steer judging on Wednesday before culminating Wednesday evening with the annual livestock sale at 7:00 p.m. This year's livestock show featured over 200 animals, and was the largest show of this kind in the state, and once again Perquimans County came out a big winner. Perquimans County took top hon ors in the hog and steer judging con tests winning grand champion hog, grand champion steer, reserve champion hog, reserve champion steer, and third place in the hog judging as well as several places in showmanship judging. According to Stan Winslow, Exten sion Director, and Jeff Copeland, Area Livestock Agent, of the Perqui mans County Extension Office, the show went very well, and they were extremely pleased with the results. Both commented on the tremendous support received by the show from the participants, their parents, and county residents. There were mixed emotions on Wednesday evening as the sale be gan, and many of the children cried before their animals reached the auc tion block, but as in years past the sale went on. This year the grand champion hog, owned by Charlie Layden, son of Douglas and Geri Layden of Belvi dere, weighed in at 235 pounds, and was sold to R. O. Givens Signs at a price of $7.00 per pound. The grand champion steer, owned by Leah Harrell, daughter of Tom mie and Sherri Harrell of Hertford, weighed in at 1,270, and was sold to the Perry Automotive Group, Inc. at a price of $8.05 per pound. The reserve champion hog, owned by Eric Elsbury, son of Randy and Pat Elsbury of the Whiteson Commu nity, weighed 235 pounds and was sold to the Perry Automotive Group, Inc. for 13.50 per pound. The reserve champion steer, owned by Tiffany Nixon, daughter of Ed and Barbara Nixon of Hertford, weighed 1,145 pounds and was sold to Farm Bureau Insurance Services of Perquimans County, Lewis B. Evans, for $1.50 per pound. The third place hog, owned by Christy Layden, daughter of Douglas and Geri Layden of Belvidere, weighed 240 pounds. It was pur chased by Miller's Livestock for $2.25 per pound. Perquimans County also won the best pen of three steers out of the four counties who participated. The other three counties, which participated were Pasquotank, Cam den, and Gates. In the showmanship categories, Perquimans County also did well winning several places. Stuart Rayburn won third place in lamb showmanship, senior division, Christopher Gregory won 1st place hog showmanship, junior division, Christy Layden won 3rd place in hog showmanship junior division.
