I ?? Of local interest Local obituaries BESSIE M. HARRELL Retired Merchant Chesapeake? Bessie M. Harrell, .retired co-owner of Han-ell's Gro cery, died Oct. 21, 1988, in a nursing home. She was 77, and lived in the 3p00 block of Battlefield Blvd. Mrs. Harrell and her husband, Gjeorge, bought the grocery store iO 1866. They operated it for eight years before they retired. Mrs. Harrell was a native of Per quimans County, N. C., and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons, Clyde A. -Harrell, Sr. and George A. Harrell, "both of Chesapeake; three sisters, Lillie. Williams and Maude Lane, both of Elizabeth City, and Kather ]ne Whedbee of Hertford, N. C.; three brothers, Joseph Smith of Elizabeth City, Harry Smith of \Vinfall, N. C. and Herbert Smith of Hopewell, Va. ; and four grandchil dren. ; The funeral was conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Oman Funeral Home, Gay & Oman Chapel, Great Bridge, by the Revs. Emmett Diggs, David Erikson and Harry Vanderford. Burial was in Chesa peake Memorial Gardens. Information was provided as a courtesy of Swindell Funeral Home. JOHN WADE HAMPTON John Wade Hampton, 91, of 102 Gaither St., Hertford, died Thurs day .evening, October 20, 1988, in Chowan Hospital. A native of White County, Georgia he was the son of the late Roxie Moore and James Berry Hampton and the widower of Lucy Eure Hampton. He was a former school bus mechanic and later re tired after 20 years as the manager rf Tuck's Barbecue in Elizabeth ?ty. He was a member of the Hert ford Baptist Church and a former member of the Hertford Lion's Club, the Elizabeth City Moose Lodge, Woodmen of the World and (he International Order of Odd Fel lows. ."Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Bill (Inez H.) Sawyer of Hert ford and Johnie (Lucy H ) McPher spn of Elizabeth City; a son, John beslie Hampton of Virginia Beach, va.; two brothers, Thomas Guy Hampton of Chesapeake, Va. and Russell Paul Hampton of Mel bourne, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; 18 gheat-grandchildren and 1 great great-grandchild. Graveside services were held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Cedar ytood Cemetary with Rev. Ray mond Needham officiating. Swin dell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. DOROTHY MOSHER FRANCE Edenton? Mrs. Dorothy Mosher France, 85, of No. 29 Primetime Village, Edenton, died Sunday af ternoon, October 23, 1988 in her home. A native of Mechanicsville, N. she was the widow of John Ken neth France and the daughter of thfe late George and Catherine Fitzgerald Mosher. She was a for mer Dietician's Helper at the Stan ford Hospital, Stanford, N. Y. Y.) and 5 great-grandchil dren. The body was shipped from Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford, to the Mereness Funeral Home in CoUeskill, N. Y. where a funeral wil> be held today (Thursday) at 11:^0 a.m. Burial will follow in Zion Rural Cemetery in Seward, N. Y. Local participants in cluded: Al and Velma Cohen, Carl Cohen, Charlotte Cohen, Tracy Cohen, Jackie Ward, Katherine Tillett, Carrie Spi vey, Frances LaMott, and Linda Logan. Brian Center news and information Etta Thompson celebrated her one hundredth birthday on October 15th, along with other residents born in that month. This event was co-hosted by Mrs. Thompson's family and Brian Center. Etta's family presented a "This is Your Life" program and certainly Etta Thompson was the center attrac tion. She sang several songs, ac companied by the Snug Harbor Combo Band. Decorations were pink and silver. About 100 guests filled our dining room. There was a shower of gifts, videos and pictures taken. The family quartet gathered for some old favorites and there were not many dry eyes as the greeting from Nancy and Ronald Reagan was read. Residents at Brian Center enjoy a Birthday Cel ebration every month and some are extra special, as was this. Plans have been made for our annual Halloween Carnival Party at 2:30 p.m. on October 31st. A cos tume parade will highlight this event. Residents, families and em ployees are invited to join in the fun. Prizes will be awarded. Also, we at Brian Center would like to extend a welcome to chil dren, accompanied by a parent to stop by for a treat between 7 and 8 p.m., October 31. Plans are in the making for the annual Christmas Party, co-hosted by the Perquimans County Jay cees. The date has been set for Tuesday night, December 6. Don't forget kids, get Mom or Dad or big sister or brother to bring you out for a treat and show us your costumes! !! Community calendar AARP to present health program The Perquimans Chapter of the A.A.R.P. (American Association of Retired Persons) will meet Mon day, October 31, 1988 at 2:00 p.m. at the Senior Center on Grubb Street in Hertford. Bea Kreckel and Min nie Yeates will present a "Health Program for Seniors". Interested persons from Perquimans, Pasqu otank and Chowan Counties arc in vited to attend, and to become members. The meeting will be pre ceded at 1:00 p.m. by a meeting of the Board of Directors. AEA meeting set There will be an important meet ing of the Albemarle Environmen tal Association on Thursday eve ning, November 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at the ECSU Kermit E. White Grad uate Center. Kate Benkert, Contaminant Spe cialist of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, will be the guest speaker. Benkert will speak on monitoring contaminants in the Albemarle Pamlico Sounds.
