Teague Award for bis outstanding work in the psychological rehabili tation of veterans with combat-re lated post-traumatic stress disor der (FTSD). Currently director of the Post Traumatic Stress Treatment Pro gram at the American Lake VA Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., Scurfield has been involved in the care of psychologically war-in jured veterans for 17 years. He is nationally recognized for his clini cal and research expertise, and leadership in the study and treat ment of PTSD. The Teague Award is awarded to a VA employee, or employees working as a team, whose achieve ments have been of special benefit to veterans with service-connected problems. The award honors the late U. S. Representative from Texas who, as chairman of the House Committee on Veterans Af fairs for 18 years, was an advocate of disabled veterans. Scurfield served as a captain in the U. S. Army Medical Service Corps in Vietnam where he was a psychiatric social worker and ex ecutive officer at the 8th Field Hos pital in Nha Trang. He began his VA career as a so cial worker at the Brentwood VA Medical Center (Lo6 Angeles) and co-organized the establishment of the first Substance Abuse Program at that hospital where he again ob served the psychological problems of returning Vietnam veterans. He became chief of the Vietnam Vet erans' Resocialization Unit, and developed and supervised the Vet erans-In-Prison Program within the Los Angeles County Jail. In 1962, Scurfield was named the first national associate director for clinical services of the VA's Read justment Counseling Service, which oversees the agency's net work of Vietnam Veteran Outreach Centers. In this position, Scurfield was responsible for the formUttC tion, planning and implementation of psychological rehabilitation, services throughout the Vet Center' program. He was instrumentaf in the development of tlie proposa 1 Mr the National Vietnam Veterans -Re adjustment Study, the largest of'itfc kind to examine the problem# of Vietnam veterans. In 1965, Scurfield became the first director of the Poet-Trauma tic Stress Treatment Programs the American Lake VA Medical Center, a state-of-the-art rehabill. tative treatment program. Hie program has been highly praised by veterans, family mem bers, veterans service organiza tions and federal, state and private sector officials. A principal and eo principal investigator on several research projects, he currently is conductin an ongoing follow-up study of graduates of the American Lake program. Scurfield holds a clinical faculty appointment at the University of* Washington School of Social Work, and also has been a lecturer at the University of Hawaii, Hilo, and the University of Southern California. A graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., Scurfield earned an M.S.W. and a D.S.W. from the Uni versity of Southern California, Los Angeles.
