The funeral was conducted Thursday, February 9, 1989, at 2 p.m. in Center Hill baptist Church by the Rev. Paul Harrell. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. CORA P. OWENS Mrs. Cora Perry Owens, 87, of Hertford, died Wednesday, Feb ruary 8, 1989, in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late Bessie Elliott and Corey Perry and the widow of Shepherd A. Owens. She was a member of Evangelical Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Eva Anne) Taylor of Hertford; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held Friday at 2:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Jordan officiating. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. CECIL J. BELCH Plymouth? Cecil James Belch, 84, of the 300 block of W. Water Street, Plymouth, died February 6, 1989. A native of Edenton, Mr Belch was a member of Mackeys United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife. SALOME HOFFLER BROTHERS Salome Hoffler Brothers of 204 Hyde Park St., Hertford, NC, died January 30, 1989 in Roanoke-Cho wan Hospital, Ahoskie, NC. She was the daughter of the late John M. and Sibelia Knox Hoffler. She was a native and resident of Hertford, NC. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Hert ford and was a former member of its Senior Choir and former presi dent of its Missionary Boara. She was a retired teacher. Survivors include her husband, Percy L. Brothers of the home and one sister, Mrs. Alberta H. Eason of Hertford. BERTHA C. LANE Mrs. Bertha Chappell Lane, 80, of 202 N. Front Street, died Satur day, February 11, in Chesapeake General Hospital after a brief ill ness. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late El bert and Delia Cofield Chappell and the widow of Edgar Lee Lane. She retired from teaching in 1974 after over 40 years; a career that began in a one-room schoolhouse near Woodland United Methodist Church. From the time Perqui mans County Central Grammar School opened until her retirement, she taught children in both the third and fourth grades. A portrait of Mrs. Lane now hangs in the Recreation Dept. In the girls' game, Perqui mans lost to Elizabeth City. Jen nifer Lane led the Perquimans team with five points. The boys and girls will travel to Washington. NC on February 24 and 25 to play in a tournament. The girls team consists of: Jennifer Lane, Heather Leicester, Sherry Metcalf, Lisa Layden, Jennifer Williams, Tammy Lane and Jamie Stone. They are coached by Rich ard Lane. The boys team members are Xa vier Shannonhouse, Ken Farrow, Travis Foreman, Darryl Elliot, Steven White, Amos Fletcher, Ja son Griffin, James Ellison, Quan dra Downing and Joseph Holder. Mrs. Lane was a very active member of Hertford United Meth odist Church having served as a delegate to Annual Conference for many years. She was president of the Delia Sham burger Circle, a member of the Administrative Board, the Council on Ministries, the United Methodist Women and taught Bible School. She also was a member of the National Retired Teachers' Association and the N.C. Association of Educators. Survivors include one son, Edgar Lee Lane, Jr., of Norfolk, Va. Funeral services were held Mon day at 2:00 p.m. in the Hertford United Methodist Church with the Rev. Raymond Wittman officiat ing. A private burial followed in Cedarwood Cemetery with Swin dell Funeral Home in charge of ar rangements. Pallbearers were Jim Bass, El don Winslow, Emmett Landing, William "Bubba" Landing, Charles T. Skinner, Jr. and Roy Reed. JANIE M. CARTER Washington - Mrs. Janie McLean Carter, 72, died Thursday, Feb ruary 9. Graveside services were held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Oakdale Cemetery, Washington. Mrs. Morris, a homemaker, was born in Taylorsville, daughter of the late D.B. and Emma Thompston Little. Her husband was the late Forrest "Bub" Mor ris. She was a member of First Baptist Church and a member of the Friendship Sunday school class. Bobby lure Senior Center offerings Caribbean cruise The Perquimans County Senior Center is now in the process of planning a cruise to the Caribbean, June 11-18, 1989. We will depart from Norfolk, fly to Miami and then board the new S. S. Seabreeze for our seven day cruise. We will visit the islands of St. Maarten, St. John, St. Thomas and Puerto Plata. The cost of the trip is $899 per person. This price covers roundtrip airfare, cruise which in cludes ml meals and port taxes. A $150 deposit is due by Feb. 24.
