Community news Obituaries WILLIAM E. BATES Edenton? William Everett Bates, 68, of Mark Drive died Tues r day, Feb. 21, in Chowan Hospital. The funeral was conducted Fri day, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. in Williford Barham Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. William Ansell. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Wil liford-Barham Funeral Home han dled the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to Cho wan Hospital or the First Presbyte rian Memorial Fund. Mr. Bates was a native of Brock ton, Mass., and was a fireman with the Morgantown, West Virginia Fire Department. He was a mem ber of the First Presbyterian Church, Edenton, and Braintree VFW Post and was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II having re ceived the bronze star. Mr. Bates was the husband of Ella Ray Weese Bates. Other survivors include four sis ters, Betty Deane of Walpole, Mass., Barbara Younie and Mar gie Austin, both of Braintree, Mass., and Ruth Younie of Wey mouth, Mass. ; two brothers, Henry Bates of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Richard Bates of Braintree. WILLIE JONES Elizabeth City? Willie Jones, 70, of 410 W Market St., Elizabeth City, N.C. died February 10, 1989 at his home. He was the son of the late Willie Jones and Mrs. Marvella Spruill Jones and the widower of Mrs. Al line Peyton Jones. Jones was a native and resident of Hertford, and Army veteran of World War II, a member of the Reid Louther American Legion Post No. 362 of Hertford and a re tired employee of the L. R. Fore man and Son Mill of Elizabeth City, - N.C. Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church, Hertford February 14 with the Rev. J. H. London, Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Cedarwood Cemetery, Hert ford, with military rites. Survivors include two daughters, Alline Jones Anderson of Nash ville, Tn., Lucy Jones Riddick of Hertford; one son, Clinton Sharpe of New Jersey; two sisters, Patsy Jones McCray and Margaret Jones of Summit, NJ ; two brothers, John Henry Jones of Edenton, NC and Harold Lee Jones of Elizabeth - City, NC and five grandchildren. Ethel Hurdle Sims, 68, Rt. 4, Box 6, Winfall, NC died Feb ruary 16, 1969 in Albemarle Hospi tal. She was the daughter of the late Solomon Hurdle Sr. and Patience Harrell Hurdle and the widow of Jimmy Sims. She was a native of Perquimans County and lived in Winfall, NC. She was a member of the Bethle hem Apostolic Faith Holiness Church, Hertford, NC. Survivors include one son, James Louis Jackson of New York, NY; one sister, Mrs. Marie H. Moore of Hertford, NC; one brother, Solomon Hurdle of Hert ford and one grandchild. Funeral services were held Feb ruary 19 in Bethlehem Apostolic Faith Holiness Church with Elder William H. Felton officiating. Burial was in the Hurdle Family Cemetery. MARY LOVE WINSLOW Miss Mary Love Winslow, 65, of Rt. 2, Hertford, died Thursday eve ning, February 23, 1989 in Chowan Hospital. A native of Perquimans County, she was the daughter of the late Bessie Lee White and Elmer Ray Winslow. She was a member of Up River Friends Meeting. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Calvin (Lela) Bundy of Rt. 3, Hert ford, five brothers, Bernard and Carl V. Winslow, both of Suffolk, Va., W. S. "Wink" Winslow of Rt. 1, Belvidere, Billy L. Winslow and Al len Winslow, both of Hertford. Funeral services were held Sun day at 2:00 p.m. in Up River Friends Meeting with the Rev. Donald Crowder officiating. Burial followed in Up River Cemetery with Swindell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. The family requests that dona tions be made in the memorial fund of Up River Friends Meeting. Da venport, 72, of the 300 block of Pearl Street, died Saturday, Feb ruary 25, 1989. Mr. Davenport, a native of Tyr rell County had retired from the Norfolk-Carolina Telephone & Telegraph Co. after 40 years. He was a member of First Christian Church and the Elizabeth City Elks Club. Survivors include his wife, Wilma G. Davenport; three daugh ters, Nancy D. Madre of Hertford, Barbara J. Wrenn of Myrtle Beach, S. C. and Mary L. Daven port of Elizabeth City; five sons, James T. Davenport of Avon, Wil liam H. Davenport of Glen Burnie, Md., Phil Davenport of Richmond, Va., Jonny Davenport of Myrtle Beach and Staff Sgt Stephen C. Newbold volunteers The Newbold-White House is seeking volunteers to staff the house and visitor center, and to lead tours. Volunteers are asked to work one day or one-half day per month at the site. The volunteer training session scheduled for Sat urday, February 25 was cancelled due to inclement weather. Each pre cinct must have 11 persons pre sent, and will elect a chairperson, three vice-chairpersons, a secre tary, a treasurer and delegates to the County Convention based on the number of votes cast in the last election. Cancer Society benetit The Perquimans County Unit of the American Cancer Society is having an "All You Can Eat" Pan cake and Sausage Benefit on Satur day, March 4 at the Perquimans County High School cafeteria, with help from the Perquimans County Ruritan Clubs. Three meals will be served.
