Mrs. Emily Dail Lane, M, at Rt. 1, Box 560, Tyner, died Tuesday evening, March 7, 1989, in Chowan Hospital A native of Chowan County she was the daughter of the late Pat rick and Sarah Boyce Dail and the widow of Lindon H. Lane, Sr. She was an active member of Chappell Hjll Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher for 20 years, was a long-time mem ber of the choir, a member of the G.A.'s and the Ladies Missionary Society. Survivors include five daugh ters, Mrs. Russell (Clarine) Arm strong, Mrs. Geraldine Lane White and Mrs. Jerry (Ouida) Speak man, all of Elizabeth City, Mrs. Maxine Bunch of Edenton and Mrs. Mullen (Joan) Haskett of Hatte ras; two sons, Lester Ray Lane and Lindon H. Lane, Jr., both of Tyner; three sisters, Mrs. Isabel Lamb and Mrs. Vivian Griffin, both of Edenton and Mrs. Lucy BUnch of Suffolk, Va.; 27 grand children; 30 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held Fri day at 3:00 p.m. in Chappell Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Ralph Knight and Rev. Bob Armstrong officiating. Burial followed in the Lane Family Cemetery with Swin dell Funeral Home in charge of ar rangements. Pallbearers were David Fletcher, Clark White, Lloyd Gar rety. Merle Bunch, Michael Lane, Chris Haskett ;.nd Brian Speak man. W. JARVIS WARD Hertford? William Jarvis Ward, 69, of 211 N. Church Street, died Friday morning, March 10, 1989, in his home. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of the late Dr. Ivie Alphooso and Mrs. Ruth Lassiter Ward. Ward retired on December 31, 1987 after serving for 25 years as Clerk of the Perquimans County Superior Court. He was a member of the N.C. Clerks of Court Associa tion, the Hertford Baptist Church where he was a long-time trea surer, a former Deacon and a Sun day School teacher and was a member and Past Master of Per Suimans Masonic Lodge No. 106. Ie was also a member of the New Bern Scottish Rite Bodies, New Bern Sudan Shrine Temple, the Hertford Rotary Club, the VFW and the William Paul Stalling Po6t of the American Legion. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Eva Harris Ward; three daughters, Mrs. Michael (Mary Bruikley) Reynolds of Oxford, Dr. Charles (Ruth) Guyer of Greensboro, and Mrs. William (Ann) Cartwright of Hertford; a sister, Mrs. Buck (Marguerite) Yearns of Winston Salem; and three grandchildren, Jackie and Michael Reynolds of Oxford and Will Cartwright of Hertford. Funeral services were held Sun day at 2:00 p.m. in Swindell Fune ral Home Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Needham officiating. King St., died Thursday, March 9, in hio home. The funeral was conducted Sun day at 2:00 p.m. in Beaver Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Paul Har rell. Williford-Barham Funeral COA releases dean's list Ten Perquimans County resi dents were among 119 College of The Albemarle students who earned scholastic averages that were high enough to assure the in clusion of their names on the col lege's winter quarter dean's list. The honor students' names were released this week by Norman L. Norfleet, COA dean of instruction. The honors list represents 8.39 percent of the overall winter en rollment of 1,418 curriculum stu dents at the community college. Perquimans scholars comprised approximately 8.4 percent of the total number of those recognized by the dean. Norfleet explained that in order to become eligible, a students must complete a minimum of 12 quarter hours of course work with a 3.5 grade point average, and have no grade below "C." The highest at tainable GPA is a 4.0, he said. Perquimans residents whose academic achievements were rec ognized included: Linda Carol Bar clift, pre-liberal arts; Linda White Beamon, pre-elementary educa tion; Jeffrey Scott Cain, mechani cal drafting and design technol ogy; Edwin Eugene Pulley, Jr., pre-computer science; William Thomas Nixon, business computer programming; Lisa Michele Ste venson, general education; John R. GEORGE L. SUTTON, JR. Virginia Beach? George Law rence Sutton, Jr., 78, of 2126 Advent Court, Virginia Beach, Va. died Monday morning, March 13, in Vir ginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Perquimans County he was the son of the late George L. and Elna Spruill Sutton and the husband of Nannie Eure Sutton. A retired assistant manager of the Colonial Store he was a member of the Berea Church of Christ and had attended the Men's Bible Class at the Hertford Baptist Church. Besides his wife survivors in clude one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Frances) Whitley of Winston-Sa lem ; two sons,, Lawrence L. Sutton of Virginia Beach and George Carl ton Sutton of El Paso, Texas; one sister, Elnora S. Sawyer of Chesa peake, Va.; two brothers, Leroy Sutton of Portsmouth, Va., and Clyde Sutton of Hertford; 8 grand children; and 9 great-grandchil dren. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 15, at 2:00 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Raymond Needham and Raphael Farrow officiating and burial was in Cedarwood Cem etery. Pallbearers were Floyd Sawyer, Joe Sawyer, Mike Marin, Steve Sutton, Ronnie Baker and Jake Chesson. Military news WESLEY E. NEWBY Navy Seaman Recruit Wesley E. Newby, son of Clinton W. and Shirley B. Newby of Rt. 3, Hert ford, NC, has completed recruit training at Recruit Training Cen ter, San Diego. During Newby's eight-week training cycle, he studied gen eral military subjects designed to prepare him for further aca demic and on the job training in one of the Navy's 85 basic fields. Newby's studies included seamanship, close order drill, Naval history and first aid. Per sonnel who complete this course of instruction are eligible for three hours of college credit in Physical Education and Hy giene. A group of county women got some great tips from Extension Agent Linda Boyette of Windsor at the "Decorating with Sheets" seminar offered by the Extension Service last week. Gates County Jaycees plan truck pull The Gates County Jaycees will sponsor a truck and tractor pull on Saturday, March 18. Weigh-in will start at 9:30 a.m. The events begin at 11:00 a.m. The show will be held at Lane Farm Supply in Gates. Ad mission is $5 for adults, $4 for chil dren. The raindate is March 25. Scheduled are classes in hot rod two- and four-wheel drive, mod ified two- and four-wheel drive, showroom stock four-wheel drive trucks and tractors.
