Of local interest ECSU Soundings EC8U NAMES WALTON NEW HEAD FOOTBALL COACH Elizabeth City State Universi ty'! Athletic Director Or. Curtis Williams announced the naming ; of Johnnie B. Walton as ECSU's new head football coach. Walton is no stranger to the po sition of coach at ECSU. He pre viously held the position from 1979-1983. Walton, since 1986, has been employed as assistant vice chancellor for development and planning at ECSU. He also is an \ alumnus of ECSU. He received <; his B.S. degree in 1968. He has also attended Hampton Institute. Chancellor Jimmy R. Jenkins ! states, "Naturally, I am proud to * accept the recommendation of Dr. Williams and to appoint Mr. Walton as head football coach. I believe that as an alumnus of the university and one who has been directly or indirectly involved with the athletic program for more than 13 years, Mr. Walton is uniquely capable of under standing the direction we are at tempting to take the school, and I believe he can more easily em brace the program. Understand ing that as a current member of the administrative team, we have a vested interest in the total success of this plan." Walton's appointment is effec tive immediately. 1M9 Commencement Exceriset at ECSU Elizabeth City State University will bold its one-hundred and eighth Commencement Convoca tion on Sunday, May 14, 1969 at 10:00 a.m., in Roebuck Stadium. The commencement speaker will be Mr. Darwin N. Davis, se nior vice president at the Equita ble Financial Companies in New York City. Mr. Davis is a resi dent of Stamford, Connecticut and a graduate of Arkansas State AM & N University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff where he received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration. He re ceived his masters degree in edu cation from Wayne State Univer sity. He is the recipient of two honorary doctorates, a doctorate of public service from Ferris State College; and a doctorate of laws from the University of Ar kansas. The first commencement at what is now Elizabeth City State University was held on Friday, May 20, 1892, at the Pasquotank County Courthouse with the late Reverend Calvin Scott Brown of Winton, North Carolina, a black minister and educator, as the first commencement speaker. College of The Albemarle Newsline College of The Albemarle will of fer Life and Health Insurance Pre licensing courses this month at the Elizabeth City campus. "Introduction ana General Law" will be offered May 12-14 and "Life and Health" will be offered May 19 21. Both classes will meet from 12:30-9:00 p.m. Fridays, 8:30 a.m. ? 5:00 p.m. Saturdays, and 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Sundays in room 107 of the C Building. Those registering will attend classes both weekends. Preregistration is required and will be held through May 12 in room 113 of the A Building. The cost for the course is $15. The text book will be available at the COA Bookstore for approximately $33. No refunds will be allowed. For further information, inter ested persons may call 335-0821, ext. 250 or 231. NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK May 7-13 has been designated as National Small Business Week, and the N. C. Community College System's Small Business Center Network is celebrating the week by recognizing the 50 small business centers across the state. College of The Albemarle's Small Business Center is one of these centers which provides a va riety of services and sponsors a broad range of seminars of interest to Albemarle area small business owners and employees at little cm do cost. In addition to working closely with local chambers of commerce, COA's Small Business Center staff members serve as a networking group with economic development leaders, professional and trade as sociations, universities, and state and federal agencies to provide as sistance to small business owners and potential owners. MAKING MEETINGS WORK SEMINAR College of The Albemarle's Small Business Center is bringing back a presenter by popular de mand for a seminar entitled "Mak ing Meetings Work." Barry Mitsch, president of Capi tol Training Associates and also vice-president of EDAC, Inc.,, an environmental consulting firm in Raleigh, rec dived rave reviews when he presented a listening skills seminar last year for COA's Small Business Center. His Tuesday, May 23, seminar is designed to make future meetings well worth the investment of a company's time and resources. "As people left Barry's listening seminar last year, many said they hoped COA could have him return to the area for another seminar," said Lucy Gordon, director of COA's Small Business Center.
