Farm and garden Farmers should watch for peanut diseases by: Stanley J. Winslow Perquimans County Extension Di rector Perquimans County peanut growers need to be on the alert for all peanut diseases. Warm, wet conditions favor the development of several potentially devastating fungi. Cercospora leafspot has already been identified in a number of fields. Southern Stem rot has not appeared as yet, but is certainly fa vored by current conditions. Scle rotinia Blight is usually associated with cooler conditions; however, it can easily infest a peanut field dur ing wet warm weather. Following are some tips for managing these peanut diseases. First, scout your fields regularly - at least once per week. Each dis ease has distinct characteristics Local delegation to attend 4-H Congress By: Juanita T. Bailey Home Economics Extension Agent A delegation of three 4-H mem bers and two adult leaders will represent Perquimans County at North Carolina 4-H Congress July 17-21 in Raleigh. The Perquimans County dele gates will join some 900 4-H members, leaders and extension agents from across the state for the annual event. The congress will be held on the N. C. State University cam pus and at the State Fairgrounds. Delegates will reside in NCSU j domitories. Monday's program includes judging in dairy, livestock and horticulture, contests in hippo logy and tractor operator, and | the annual state 4-H Honor Club | tapping. Tuesday's program features the finals in some 35 contests to pick state winners and special tracks in international intrique, state government and the arts, and the annual 4-H entertains show. A drug abuse rally and workshops are scheduled Wednesday morning. Speakers and can be easily identified. Good control depends upon early detec tion and early treatment. Secondly, use good cultural prac tices to minimize disease pressure. It is too late to discuss the impor tant practices of rotation and vari ety selection for 1989, but there are still things to do. Many peanut growers are ready to make a final cultivation for weed control or to incorporate land plas ter. Take special precautions not to throw soil onto peanut limbs. Other Thursday highlights in clude workshops, the election and installation of state 4-H coun cil officers, a delegate banquet and the state 4-H fashion revue. Among the events in which Perquimans County 4-H'ers are participating are Public Speak ing, Chicken Barbecue and Elec tricity. In many years sclerofinia blight begins on plants which were damaged by tra ctor tires. Also, apply land plaster and root worm insecticides before vine growth reaches the row middles. These operations reauire many passes through the field and are po tentially damaging to large pea nuts. Thirdly, Perquimans growers will have a leafspot advisory pro gram available this summer. We will be monitoring weather condi tions with an instrument called a hygrothermograph. This will allow America, you're the best "What's good about America?"
