School First school-sponsored summer care program was very successful Students enjoy a game of monopoly together in the comfort of their air conditioned room at PCHS. Playing games on the computers and Nintendo were favorite activ ities of the summer care participants. Children of all ages like to color, and those who stayed in the sum mer care program enjoy a quiet coloring time. One of the most exciting field trips taken during the summer care program was to the OuterBanks. There, the children visited the N.C. Aquarium located on Roanoke Island. A touch tank there enabled the children to touch marine creatures. The summer care program sponsored by the Perquimans County Schools was quite success ful. Operational from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., the center located at Ptuquimans High School offered care to school aged children. The program began during the latter half of the 1968-89 school year. After school care and care during teachers work days was offered at Central Grammar School. Students from other schools in the county were bussed to the site af ter classes ended each day. , An after-school snack, playtime and home work time were incorporated into the schedule for the program. Children had time to complete homework assignments, which were reviewed by an assistant in the after-school program. The employees did not teach or correct homework, but made sure that a student followed directions and that the work was neat. The program was so successful that it was ex panded this summer to offer all-day care. Be cause the high school is air conditioned, the county chose that facility to house summer care. Elise Whitehurst is the coordinator of the pro gram. She smiles broadly when she talks about her program, and is obviously pleased with its initial success. This school year, the program has been again relocated, this time to Hertford Grammar School. Anyone interested in learning more about af ter school care should contact the schools ad ministration office. Deputy Ralph Robinson visited the children this summer to remind them about safety rules. What could be more fun than a day at the beach with friends? The group that went to the Outer Banks frollicked in the surf, played in the sand, visited the Wright Brothers Memorial, and best of all, ate at McDonald's. A tired busload of children returned to Hertford. Read the echool newe in the Perquimans Weekly ECU'S Marching Pirate s unveil new uniforms Blast Carolina University's 1989 football season opener on Sept. 9 in Ficklen Stadium will mark two firsts - Bill Lewis' first outing as head coach and the Marching Pi rates' first appearance in brand new military-style uniforms. Band director Tom Goolsby said no special ceremonies are planned to unveil the uniforms, which were purchased with proceeds from a fund raising campaign launched last fall. "I think everybody's going to be concentrating on football," he said. Nevertheless, the Marching Pi rates should attract their share of attention duringpre-game and halftime shows. The waist-length puiple coats with their gold and white trim and matching purple pants will give the 250-member band a totally different look. Large plumes of ostrich feathers top the new purple and white hats, and purple ana gold flags have been ordered for the color guard. "We're very grateful to DuPont, alumni, friends, the university and community at large for their very generous gifts. Gollsby said. "That's the only way we could have gotten the uniforms. There's abso lutely no way that the state ever al locates money for this."
