School
First school-sponsored summer care program was very successful
Students enjoy a game of monopoly together in the comfort of their
air conditioned room at PCHS.
Playing games on the computers and Nintendo were favorite activ
ities of the summer care participants.
Children of all ages like to color, and those who stayed in the sum
mer care program enjoy a quiet coloring time.
One of the most exciting field trips taken during the summer care
program was to the OuterBanks. There, the children visited the N.C.
Aquarium located on Roanoke Island. A touch tank there enabled the
children to touch marine creatures.
The summer care program sponsored by the
Perquimans County Schools was quite success
ful. Operational from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.,
the center located at Ptuquimans High School
offered care to school aged children.
The program began during the latter half of
the 1968-89 school year. After school care and
care during teachers work days was offered at
Central Grammar School. Students from other
schools in the county were bussed to the site af
ter classes ended each day. ,
An after-school snack, playtime and home
work time were incorporated into the schedule
for the program. Children had time to complete
homework assignments, which were reviewed
by an assistant in the after-school program. The
employees did not teach or correct homework,
but made sure that a student followed directions
and that the work was neat.
The program was so successful that it was ex
panded this summer to offer all-day care. Be
cause the high school is air conditioned, the
county chose that facility to house summer care.
Elise Whitehurst is the coordinator of the pro
gram. She smiles broadly when she talks about
her program, and is obviously pleased with its
initial success.
This school year, the program has been again
relocated, this time to Hertford Grammar
School.
Anyone interested in learning more about af
ter school care should contact the schools ad
ministration office.
Deputy Ralph Robinson visited the children this summer to remind
them about safety rules.
What could be more fun than a day at the beach with friends? The
group that went to the Outer Banks frollicked in the surf, played in the
sand, visited the Wright Brothers Memorial, and best of all, ate at
McDonald's. A tired busload of children returned to Hertford.

ECU'S Marching Pirate
s unveil new uniforms
Blast Carolina University's 1989
football season opener on Sept. 9 in
Ficklen Stadium will mark two
firsts - Bill Lewis' first outing as
head coach and the Marching Pi
rates' first appearance in brand
new military-style uniforms.
Band director Tom Goolsby said
no special ceremonies are planned
to unveil the uniforms, which were
purchased with proceeds from a
fund raising campaign launched
last fall. "I think everybody's going
to be concentrating on football," he
said.
Nevertheless, the Marching Pi
rates should attract their share of
attention duringpre-game and
halftime shows. The waist-length
puiple coats with their gold and
white trim and matching purple
pants will give the 250-member
band a totally different look.
Large plumes of ostrich feathers
top the new purple and white hats,
and purple ana gold flags have
been ordered for the color guard.
"We're very grateful to DuPont,
alumni, friends, the university and
community at large for their very
generous gifts. Gollsby said.
"That's the only way we could have
gotten the uniforms. There's abso
lutely no way that the state ever al
locates money for this."
