J&'.-Jr si. & Evans Receives Mammography Certification - Chowan Hospital’s Mammography Services received a boost as Radiology Technologist Becky Evans recently passed an examination for advanced qualifica tions/certification in Mammography. Mrs. Evans, who’s been employed at Chowan Hospital for 13 years, passed an examination sponsored by the American College of Radiology, which is a major cer tifying body for radiologic technologists nationally. It was only the second time such a test specializing in mammography was ” administered, and Mrs. Evans' first attempt. '' Subjects covered in the examination were positioning of the patient, anatomy, patient education and physics. Chowan Hospital's Mammography Service is fully accredited by the American College of Radiology. However, with Mrs. Evans' individual certification, it enhances the public's confidence in Chowan Hospital's Mammography Service and per sonnel. - - -o '&■ Chowan Hospital currently performs 30 mammograms weekly. Mobile SUrgical C-Arm System A new piece of equipment that allows surgeons to perform procedures from ac tual images on a screen, is Chowan Hospital's latest technological advance. The "Stenoscop", a mobile surgical C Arm system, decreases patients' time un der anesthesia as surgeons are able to continue procedures without interruptions. Previously, surgeons experienced delays while waiting for the x-ray film to be devel oped in the Radiology Department and car ried back to the operating room. The mobile, C-Arm system, which costs in excess of $100,000, may also be used in ICU for placement of temporary pacemakers and various catheters. The equipment is also well suited for performing orthopedic procedures such as broken bones. Registered Radiologic Tech nologists operate the C-Arm during sur gery. Psychiatric Center Offers Several Programs Chowan Hospital's Psychiatric Center has sponsored several health issue pro grams during the year either at Chowan Hospital or in Elizabeth City, Hertford and Currituck. The programs included: Postpartum depression, menopause, psychological aspects of pre-menstrual tension, anxiety disorders, alcoholism and the family, psy chodynamic effects of AIDS, sleep disor ders, and depression.
