Volunteers were trained in the aging process, communica tion skills, community re sources, activities of daily living, health care decisions for caregiv ers and care receivers, stress management for caregivers, and adult protective services. Each VIP received a Resource Director for Senior Adults to use In their respective counties in sharing with caregivers and a volunteer manual notebook. Planning Ahead for Elder Care. The elder care recruiter training is funded by the Kate B. Reynolds Health Care Trust According to Dr. Lloyd, this program sneds volunteers out Into the community to locate un paid caregivers of dependent older adults. The volunteers then share Information about caregiv ing techniques and community resources for caregivers. The program is unique in that these counties have joined together to make the most of their resources and created the directory for the Albemarle area. “One of the most important things for the VIPs to do is to identify or find someone who is a ' caregiver and link them to aging services and that one contact can really change someone’s life,” said Ms. Hollenbach. Downum OPTOMETRIST SCREENING FOR OLDER DRIVERS When older drivers have auto accidents, the reason is often what they can — or can't — see. A recent study found that older drivers with a restricted useful field of vision (UFOV) are three to four times more likely to have auto accidents in intersections. The UFOV is the visual space in which a person can respond quickly to visual stimuli, such as an oncoming car. Researchers measured the subjects’ UFOV with a visual attention analyzer, a computerized instru ment that tests how fast the person sees something and reacts to it The screening accurately identified risk and nonrisk drivers in neatly 85 percent of cases. Interesting result: many of the subjects who had failed* the UFOV test had no record of reported accidents. Researchers suggest that older drivers with vision problems modify their driving habits, avoiding heavy traffic, night driving and such. Dr. A.F. DOWNUM 103 W. Eden St. Edenton, N.C.
